Thread: Does philosophy extend beyond questions of religion?

  1. #1

Default Does philosophy extend beyond questions of religion?

We have a whole philosophy section and yet all we seem to discuss is religion.
And I use the word discuss really thinly here.

I'd like to refer you to a page that perhaps we should all read before we engage in philosophical debate:

Guide to the Study of Philosophy

I think these beginning points are useful.

As for topics, well, there are millions of questions:

    What is the mind?
    Are men and women different?
Is there life on other planets?
    What is love?
Can you ever understand others completely?
How does language develop, occur and work?
    Are animals sentient?
What is truth and does it exist?
How do you know what you know?

All of these are great topics for discussion.

    the reason for life...errr...head hurts
I live in my own little world, but it's ok, everyone knows me here.

How much wood, would a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

    Just kidding.

Elecctra, why not make posts on each of those questions. Each one is pretty involved and can not be answered collectively easily.

    Default Philosophy

I think we should start acknowledging the fact that everything is philosophical.

Questions like a man is a lesbian trapped in a male body etc...

in philosophical debates the aim is not necessarily to agree but to exchange views that are results of various perceptions informed by knowledge or ignorance.

Well I just started one of the topics suggested in the OP... let's see how it works out. I'm tired of all the religious bible/quran/[insert holy book here] thumping.

What kind of a question is this, oh, you mean why do we only ever discuss the same things here? Wel,l the existence/non-existence of god is the most relevant subject for now and most topics have a tendency to slide towards god or religion (which is my main problem with religion by the way).

But u're right, a lot of other interesting things can be discussed here, like Logic and ...., see my point?

The way I see it, deep down most folk who question are looking for workable reasons to do the things that they want to do, even if those things are outside the normally accepted way of doing them. So if I want write with my left hand, then I would look for reasons that make it seem acceptable, thus allowing me to get away with writing with my left hand

    +1

People can't respect others and then as soon as the others start to retaliate the original bullies cry foul.

Lol, why can't we just debate something else for a while? Maybe only make every second tuesday "Look for a reason to blame religion for all evils on eart"-day?

Respecting others are fine and dandy. What is happening here over and over and over is people expect their ideas and beliefs to be respected and then feel insulted when it isn't. Then feel righteously mortified to lash out and then saintly martyrial when answered in turn.

When you come to a philosophical debate sub-forum, I’d suggest the whole idea would be to have your convictions challenged and not to preach to the converted. There is church for that.

Lol, not saying do the yes and amen bid. But a poster that posts about his religion/beliefs being great by other posters: "haha God fsck sheep" and "Christ was a Zomby, did he enjoy the necroph?" and stuff like that without debating anything is silly.

These people don't debate anything, they ridicule and then run and complain as soon as one of the others make a point of handing their ass to them in any other intelligent debate on this forum.

No offence but if I was in the religious school of thought that Jesus was my Lord and Saviour I would not like hearing he was a homo and he loves the cock or his dirty deads with sheep/pigs/corpses and then if someone was to call him that and I called their mother a 3rd grade hooker that sailors won't touch after 6 bottles of rum that person should then not get upset.

Insults either way has no place in proper debate. Neither do snide remarks and ridiculing another.
