Thread: Wireless Router for I burst

Default Wireless Router for I burst

Hi, i am a newbie in the process of buying a PC for home. I have decided to go for Iburst and am told that i need to buy a wireless router and aerial, according to Iburst these cost about R1400 for the router and R300 for the aerial, when i called Lightedge they quoted me R650 for the router and it comes with an aerial that works on a 50m radius, can anyone advise why such a huge price discrepancy, would i be able to use the cheaper optoin, this will be for a desktop PC
    Thanks

The R300 for the aerial sounds like they mean an iBurst antenna, you don't need an aerial for a normal router. R650 is the normal price for a router, what iBurst were quoting I don't know, but obviously don't buy it. It must be either their Dual WAN router which is a waste of money or the VOIP wireless router.

You do however need the modem from iBurst, but that is a bit more expensive than R1400...

You don`t need a router but you DO need a modem from Iburst.
The antenna is optional, get them to come do a speed test first.

Hi, thanks the modem is about R2000 but previous owner who had iburst said that he needed an aerial and router, all very confusing but will ask them to come and do a check first, i think thats the best place to start ! Thanks for the advice

Phoned Iburst and they only stock the Dual Wan router so i wont go that option. Also the aerial is actually an antennae you were right and looks like you cant avoid the R399.00

I'm using the Gigabyte GN-BR01G router with iBurst and I'm very happy with it.

Let me put it this way, you can use a router with Iburst but it’s not a necessity.
You have to use a iburst modem and it is a necessity.

The router is only used to connect multiple computers in your home or office to one iburst connection.
If you are the only one that’s going to use the connection there is no need for a router.

Look at the link i provided.
The second one from the top(Modem for desktop computers (USB with Ethernet port)
is the modem you will need.

Let them come do a speed test, maybe you will not need an antenna at all.

it's an antenna; insects have antennae, we put up antennas

you don't need an ariel for a normal router.
Um .. Ariel is this mermaid

OK, enough silly buggers now. I don't know ALL that they sell but the dual WAN router isn't necessarily a waste of money - not when you actually NEED the dual option. Still, for THIS occasion it seems more than necessary.

    sho' 'nuff.

don't mind me, I'm a smartarsed old pedant and you tripped over one of my BIG buttons ..and apparently, in my zeal to banish the demons of antennae :cringe: I got a wee bit overexcited and lost track of what I was correcting. (so much for my always being right, eh?)

The only use for a router would be to share the modem connection with other users in your LAN. Use the Netgear WGT624 if you require wireless connections or the RP614 if wireless is not a requirement. These work quite well.

    Default iBurst PC card router

If you've got an iBurst or HSDPA PC card, then try this one out http://www.dovado.com/Portfolio_WRG.html

Seems to have pretty much everything you'll need...WiFi, VoIP, LAN and a big ol' hole for the card.

    Front: http://www.dovado.com/images/WRG-front.jpg

    Rear: http://www.dovado.com/images/WRG-rear.jpg

Check it out with iBurst Australia: http://www.dovado.com/press/dovado-20061212.html

No other box I could find like it that can do all that AND support iBurst.

Happened to even find it on YouTube when I searched for "iBurst". Pretty nifty solution with the battery. You can be amongst the first walking wifi stations.....oh joy!

Im using a Linksys WRT54GL flashed with DD-WRT, and it is working like a charm sharing the wifi connection to my PC and my Nokia E61.

I got it for R600 online. I could have gotten it for R550, but the store was waiting for stock and I was very impatient!

    Default Snap!

    The Linksys WRT54GL that is...

I am finding it more and more lately that online stores advertise stuff, and when you order (AND PAY!!) they send you an email saying that they actually don't have the stuff in stock, and they will refund you, which they eventually do after being harassed!

I ordered a PCI wireless card for my desktop about a week ago from Digitalplanet, and I am STILL waiting for my refund as they don't have stock! Same issue with a Celtic Frost CD from Musica...

Sorry, I know this is off topic, but I needed to rant...
