Hi all,

I am looking for a smartphone with messaging in mind - both e-mail and SMS. Thus, a keyboard would be great. Unfortunately, budget is not unlimited and I don't want to pay in more than R1000 on my Weekender+ contract.

I am currently considering:

Samsung i600,
SE M600i, or
Nokia E61

Anyone have any suggestions or opinions? I played around with the Samsung today and it was very nice (very thin, looks good and like the fact that it comes with 2 batteries), although the screen is a bit smallish in my opinion (even though all of them has the same resolution). Convenient internet browsing is also a must, that's why I like the ones with WiFi (Samsung and Nokia) built in. But the touchscreen in the SE is great...

Help?

Was never very fond of Samsungs. I would say go with either the SE or the E61 - both great phones. My pick though would probably be an HTC TyTN - so maybe try and get a good price on that?

M600 is a great phone but GP's choice is brilliant, WM device with keyboard will change your life only its not realy geared for one handed use.

Well, I have TyTn and it's brilliant. gonna cost you a bit more than a 1000 bucks though. otherwise look at a Nokia 9300i, best phone keyboad out there imo.
thought thats due to be replaced by the e90 in a coupla months.

Yeah, would love a Tytn, but unfortunately I don't have R3800 to pay in for this upgrade...

Any of the other HTC's recommended?

The 9300i is old should have reached the end of its production cycle already all they did was take a 9300 and add WiFi the M600i is more current. You want something with at least 3G.

Why? He's only looking for messaging so 3G wouldn't serve to do anything other than raise the price.

The HTC S620 wouldn't be a bad choice either, it has the qwerty keyboard on the front, similar to the E61 and it also looks better (to me anyway).

I'd recommend playing around with a few different HTC's before choosing one, but trust me they're streets ahead of anything with Symbian. Go down to a shop where they stock them and ask to have a look at a few.

Oops didn't read that it was a weekender contract, probably have a hard time getting an HTC at a reasonable price. If it was a procall contract then it wouldn't be a problem. Probably get the E61 then.

Bwana WM is probably the best mobile OS, so it would more of a "nice to have" than a necessity :) But what an amazing "nice to have"! /drools

I know a truck load of people that would disagree with that including my neighbour literally just ran a 2lb sledge through his his i-mate sp-jas [sp?] because he "couldn't take windows crashing mid-call" while he was on with clients anymore. He's just arrived home with some nokia that runs Symbian. Leo Laport of TWIT made the same claims to its unreliability.

Me, I'll stick with whatever RIM uses - it's never crashed yet. :)

Funny I never had my Jasjar crash during a call doing other things yes I find some apps are badly written and cause problems but uninstalling them fixes it.

well, earlier Windows Mobile devices had their share of problems, no doubt. But I find that Windows Mobile 6 is stable and bug free, even fast ;)
Not the simplest of interfaces, but once you get the hang of it, it'll be hard to give up that kind of functionality for anything else.
