How does one restore the software back to the origional software that come with the Huawei E220 USb modem?

if it's the firmware you're talking about, surely just reflash the modem with the previous version? ask vodacom3g if you need to get it. maybe i'm missing the point.

Agree, get the original software. Nor sure where though (maybe Huawei), uninstall what you've got on your PC and load the new software onto the modem.

I suspect you need to unplug and plug the modem back in and the dashboard should auto install.

Why do you need to do this though?

I agree with Vodacom3g. Does he not work for Vodacom?. Maybe v3g can get us the software or a link etc etc.

I have searched all over for the original software but no luck. I have even tried Huawei that make the modem. MTN have there version as a download but Vodacom does not.

In a previous link you also downloaded the Mobile Connect software like I have. It connects every time and also has sms facility. Since using this software I have never had a problem. But I would also like to have the original software. I will keep searching.

The "original" E220 software is the Huawei Mobile Connect [HMC] software, I think what you mean is: the software that was pre-loaded on your E220 when you got it, which would probably have been Vodafone Mobile Connect Lite [VMC-L] - which would have been placed on the E220 before it ended up in the shop where you received your E220.

I personally prefer the HMC dashboard to the VMC|VMC-L dashboard software, I don't know if VMC v9 supports the E220, if it does you could use VMC v9 instead of VMC-L without having to flash the E220 with an ISO image.

IC.
Yes you are 100% correct. I also prefer the HMC software easy to use & works & connects every time.

I am having problems with the Huawei Mobile Connect [HMC] software which I downloaded from the Huawei site.

I am using *99***1# as my authentication number and I get this error when I try and connect:
"The connection attempt failed because the modem (or other connecting device) on the remote computer is out of order"

I really just want the original software back ASAP as I need this connection to do support for work. The reason that I initially changed was to get SMS functionality but now I'd rather have internet functionality.

I phoned 082155 and they advised me to install E220Update_11.110.05.00.00(3.6M Vista) which I did but it didnt seem to change anything.

Can anyone help me?

This update would only stabilise the Modem and give you support for Windows Vista. OTHERWISE IT DOES NOTHING FOR YOU. We are trying to get hold of the software that is originally shipped on the E220 USB Modem but so far no luck. Will let you know when we find a copy. I personally and some other guys have had no problems at all with the HMC software. VCM-L gave me loads of problems.

I suggest you use 8 or 16 in the number instead of 1 and also try using 3G only it works well for me.
WEB is correct. But there are 2 ways to Connect see also my post later on.
Let use know how it goes.:)

you need to open up the modem in systems/hardware and put in the extra settings , i don't have them on me at the moment then the mobile connect software works.

Okay go to the modem properties in windows hardware manager, advance tag and enter this at+cgdcont=1,"IP","internet" in the extra settings dialog box then your modem will connect. Remember to always use the same usb port as windows does not carry these setting to other usb ports.

Thanks for all the help. I will try these fixes this evening.

It seems that the only way to get the original software on the modem is to take it into a vodashop and they will take it and restore it.

Unfortunately I cant do without my modem for a while so I'll keep that as a last resort.

V3G, is there no chance of voda organizing the Lite Dashboard in an executable firmware update like the one provided on the vodacom website?

I am running my system with no settings on the modem and it works fine. If you setup the profile correctly then it works fine. I have tested several numbers and have found that 8 & 16 works no problem.

This is the command that you need to use on the hardware settings.
AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet"; That is if you want to use it there. Otherwise leave this area blank. Now use the network connection setting on HMC to create your profile. As I have said before, use the value 8 or 16 I am sure this will work for you. The reason for 1 not working is because slot 1 has not been setup for internet on the modem etc. slot 8 and 16 have already been set to work with Internet. Let me know if this works. I have tested the above and it works with my E220.

The reason why the VMC-L works is because they set the modem initialisation string to AT+CGDCONT=16,"IP","internet"; and the default profile dials *99***16#

With HMC you have to create a profile with VMC-L it has been created for you by default. Therefore with HMC if 8 does not work 16 will because the modem has been initialised by default for slot 16. I have actually tested this all on my modem etc.

E220 Internet Profile set-up using HMC

I doubt it if Vodashop can help. I have also tried customer care but they do not really understand what I am talking about. Once you have HMC working you will not want to go back to VMC-L (VMC light version, no sms etc)

Ok i have just stolen the vodafone software of someones brand new usb modem its a 19MB folder if anyone wants to try. I prefer the Huawei software so don't want to make sure it works. But there is a file setupE220dongle.exe. Unless you guys are all going to chip in if i fry my modem ?

I actually also took a backup of all of the files on my modem before I started messing with it.

I'll try and run that exe when I get home.

I can see why the HMC is better but I do think that the lite version is a very nice and unobtrusive installation especially when one is using the modem on many different computers. The HMC is a slightly 'heavier' installation.

Ideally I am wanting to have the lite software on the modem and I can carry a copy of HMC on a memory stick or something.

I'll keep you guys posted on whether running setupE220dongle.exe actually rolls the firmware and software back to the original one.

If it works then I'll host the folder for download or something.

Here is a summary of tests I have done.:-

1) Here is a link for VMC-Lite http://www.mobileconnected.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/E220 software.zip This is not the original software that is loaded on the E220. It re-loads the E220 with a newer version of VMC-Lite & has sms facility. For me it gave the same errors as the previous version. Somtimes does not connect. Says that the device is being used by another program etc. Takes long to connect, slow etc.

2) Tried VMC 9.1 (@ +-75 Megs) it takes looong to install, took a looooong time to get connected, very slow. Vista support ?. It has auto optimization. I did not see the benefit.

3) re-flashed with HMC. I was up and running and connected within 5-10 minutes. It also has support for Vista. I use Netmeter to give me data stats.

N/B I see there is a newer version of V9.1 @ Vodacom downloads than what I used. I will try it later on.

All I think we really want to do is connect to the Internet. HMC is simple and easy. All that has to be done is create a profile.(APN)

E220 Vodafone VMC-Lite Software

For those that are looking for this/these files here goes. 2 Files to download the Firmware you can also get from Vodacom. But VMC-Lite not. VMC-Lite is latest version 2.1.6.1 (SMS) included. VMC-Lite will update the E220 modem software also. These files also have support for Vista.

http://www.lantic.net/software_downloads.htm (VMC-Lite v2.1.6.1)

This is the Huawei Connection Module & Software to flash Modem. Vista support. This is for those guys that do not like VMC-lite.

Hi Guys.

Just got back from overseas so I have missed out on all the answers here.

The reason that I did want to restore my modem was that I have tried to install the version 9 from Vodacoms site, but it screwed up my PC and modem.

Luckely I did download the software from Huawei Website and tonight I have installed the software. At first it did not see my modem, but after inserting the string: AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet" and changing my Dial-up number to *99***1# instead of *99***16#, all is working now fine.

I have also found by selecting the Network Setting as Manual insteat of Auto, does give me better signal strength, and Choose Connection Type as 3G only does to the trick.

1) Yes you download from there.
2) Take the first one from the top it is the latest.
3) It is also good to do a firmware flash.

Remember once you have run the update software (E220-HOST etc.) You have to uninstall VMC-lite. Do a power shutdown & restart and install the from the modem.
