Yes, they are investing in the network but a lot can happen in 5 years and they do know that they won't be able to charge the price they are charging now and that usage would increase over this period as a result. In the short term though I think the focus should be on decreasing the price rather than pushing for an upgrade that will most likely prevent this and thus won't even be needed. A large portion of that R5bn is also for shortening the local loop which is needed if they are to roll out their IPTV services.

Do I have to remind you that Telkom is limiting the speeds on it's network so it can charge even more for it's use. There is certainly spare capacity that is not being used. To increase throughput on a cable you simply need to increase the number of "channels" and laying new fibre is only really needed when there's not already any in the vicinity.

Well it's all actually talked about on this forum if you keep an eye open for the important bits...

But don't confuse the opinions for actual facts. A lot of us have very strong opinions in certain areas that we won't easily let go of and sometimes we just have to agree to disagree.

Will this ever become a reality? I see like Verizon has unlimited data, think they are removing it or something, sorry if I got my facts wrong, but it would be really cool, even If it was just data in your phone unlimited sorry if this exist already in ZA, not up with my facts lately

Verizon doesn't offer unlimited data anymore. Even if you are already on unlimited as soon you upgrade you will be forced to choose their new package on which you share X amount of data over multiple devices. Initially they didn't believe users would use so much data as they do. My source is Engadget mobile podcast 146. It would be great if we could have unlimited data but I think it may only be a nerd dream

    EDIT: multiple devices you own

Telkom does not interfere in Vodacom's business at management level. Fact. They do a good enough job controlling the VC network growth with the 'supply' of backhaul as it is......

I remember Jannie making a comment somewhere here in myBB once saying that Vodacom is already uncapped @ R2 per meg.
    Daft if you ask me?

I think we might see uncapped form 8ta or Cell C first before Vodacom or MTN (yes MTN have uncapped light, but it sucks!)

Vodacom's 2GB for R149, and 3GB for R199 works out cheaper than USD10 per GB. These are contract only of course, and not really competitive when taking deals such as 8ta's prepaid and contract data packages into account.

And there is the R2/MB OOB shark to watch out for as well.

And prepaid? Their prepaid (voda) is 289 for 1 gig. Disgusting and yes a rip off
