I've got an Intel 915GAV motherboard with a P4 3g processor. My pc sounds like a plane taking off when opening apps (I'm on Vista). The noise is always there sometimes faint and @ other times really loud. I feel that either the tower is too small or I need another processor i.e. core 2 duo (if so which one?). I've also got a 7600GT card.

Your views please.

Thank you :)

Any of the 1.8 or higher Intel Dual cores - E2160 (around R900) or E4300 (around R1100) will beat your P4 and run cooler and quieter.

Don't you just have a bad fan somewhere?

I think its his BIOSs fan control system, it keeps it quiet when the CPU is cool and spins up (makes it louder) when the CPU temp rises...

Thank you guys, I've got three fans (including the one that comes with the processor). One on the back vent and the other on the side, I can't fit a bigger fan as the tower is on the small side. Like I'm burning a dvd as we speak and there's the constant humming and apps are taking longer to open, would the dual core solve these prolems?

Yes, dual core will help (but please dont get Pentium-D dual core). You dont say how much RAM you have...

Just take into consideration that you'll need to get a new mobo if you're going for a Core2 or Pentium E processor. Your chipset is unfortunately not compatible with any of the new cpus.

fudge :( how much would that cost? But firstly would I sort out the flippen noise if I have to go this root?

Fans are normally not that noisy. Are you running with the covers off? Some case, extra fans & power supply fans like to make peculiar noises now and again. :)

Covers on, so would my solution lean towards getting a bigger tower for extra cooling? A bigger fan would make a racket

The humming sound could also be a cover that is vibrating. Does this only occur when you write a dvd? These drives tend to vibrate and cause some funny sounds. It is a bit difficult to suggest a solution without hearing and seeing. Maybe get a buddy to come and listen and get another opinion. If you have the money go ahead and spend it but I don't believe it is going to solve the noise problem. Oh by the way do you have a fan on your video card? These fans tend to give a lot more problems.
