Zimbabwean police have arrested more than 1 300 shop owners and business executives for defying the government's order so far, reports IOL.

Of those arrested include two South African businessmen, one from Edgars and the other from Nando's, for failing to slash their prices by half as the Robert Mugabe-led government instructed last week.

Can we now say to Mbeki - "Told you so".

Wonder how long it is before FIFA withdraws 2010 from SA due to instability issues.

I wonder what the comment from the SA government is going to be after this blatant attack on SA interests and citizens?

Even his own is turning against him, and what does he do... fires them. babwawbaw ,you must admire the man

Gono has also written to State Security Minister Didymus Mutasa, who chairs the joint operations command behind the blitz, saying he opposed the campaign.

This is said to have angered Mugabe, and left him considering firing his previously loyal right-hand man, a move that could spell more trouble for his embattled regime.

... and in even more scary news:

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is preparing a dramatic plan to rescue the shattered Zimbabwean economy by extending the rand monetary area into Zimbabwe, according to sources.
FANTASTIC solution there okes. Rather give money that could be used for the upliftment of South Africans to that f@#cking crazy b@stard across the border

    He will last long.

As long as South Africa continues to prop him up, he will last until the old goat dies of old age.

Kind of reminds me of SA propping up Smith's Rhodesian govt after UDI. They lasted a LONG time.

SA needs to impose sanctions on Zim. Cut off fuel and electrical supplies and then build a 10 meter high concrete fence along the SA zim border.

Let's see how long uncle bob lasts then.

In the latest pandamonium, the price of fuel has been slashed by 70% - from Z$180 000 (about R5 000) to Z$55 000 (about R1 500).
    Something looks wrong here.

    From another story:

In a move likely to precipitate a fuel crisis, the teams on Saturday ordered service stations in Harare to reduce the price of a litre of diesel and petrol from about 200 000 Zimbabwe dollars to between 55 000 and 60 000 dollars.

The new price is worth around 0.34 US dollars per litre, which is way below the selling price for fuel in the region. In neighbouring Mozambique, petrol sells for nearly 1.50 US dollars a litre.

Maybe Mbeki's 'silent diplomacy' should come into effect. Silently ignoring all requests for aid from Zimbabwe, closing down the borders. If I was a shop owner, I would close the doors and keep the stock for self preservation. How long do you think Uncle Bob's supporters will stand by him if he cant feed them?

You know what will happen... SA will welcome old bob with open arms and all his refugees.

If that happens this country is f$cked

Thousands of students were on Monday evicted from Zimbabwe's main university campus after they protested at the weekend against a decision to deny them food for not paying their fees.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is obliged to help South African citizens if they are in trouble outside the country. They have shown this through rescue missions after the Tsunami, Indian Earthquakes etc.

But the businessmen and/or their families or managers etc have to inform the Department of the issues - Once the Department has this they can step in to help - otherwise their hands are tied
