Thread: Lawrence’s Guide to Ordering Home DSL

I could not order ADSL unless I had a telephone line at home.
    I paid double installation charges:
    1. First when I ordered the telephone line.
    2. Second when I ordered the ADSL line.
If I got the ADSL line portion done by an ISP on their wholesale account, it would be regarded as self configuration & I would not have had to pay the 2nd installation charge.

Just an update, I can confirm that the Closer 1 option does NOT have ANY install charges. R0.

So if you need to get a new line, Closer 1 is an option

went to the Telkom walk-in centre in Centurion mall. was quite helpful. i need to pay a conversion fee of about R100 to get from pre-paid to regular and take a 24 month contract which will include ADSL charges and monthly line rental. will get the modem free and save the istallation cost if i connect it up myself.

i am sceptical doubting whether to take it as I would be tied down to the contract even though internet costs should be dropping around next year sometime.

I may just opt for the 3G option.

Rather just buy your own modem/router and don't sign a contract.

Guys, what about to update this nice tutorial with one important note: there is NO FREE MODEM. Cite from http://www.telkom.co.za/products_ser.../ordering.html :

"You can choose between the standard offering or a 24-month contract offering. The 24-month contract bundle includes a Telkom modem with a splitter/filter combination. The Standard offering will provide you with the ADSL access only, you need to buy a modem either from Telkom or from an external supplier."

    So....

Guys, I need your help .... Moving to a new house that has an existing telephone line and ADSL line (basically taking it over) What would be the cheapest option for me. I'm currently using IBurst, so I don't have an ADSL modem at all. We need the telephone line, but I'm not sure on the ADSL side. Any suggestions?

get a wireless modem and a filter to use the phone line
call Telkom for the telephone and ADSL line rental.
    call an ISP for bandwidth

Wiht all the uncapped offerings of late, it would be a great idea to update this.

I am a total noob at adsl having never had a telkom phone for the past 10 years.

Something I can add is that a friend told me that if you are an edgars club member you can get the installation free if you get a closer plan and stick with it for 3 months.
