Wiht all the uncapped offerings of late, it would be a great idea to update this.

I am a total noob at adsl having never had a telkom phone for the past 10 years.

Something I can add is that a friend told me that if you are an edgars club member you can get the installation free if you get a closer plan and stick with it for 3 months.

I can tell you now that the closer 2 option includes free installation.
When i ordered DSL 3 months ago, the closer 1 was no longer free.
I dont know about the Edgars thing, but closer 2 is still free.
As has been mentioned before, order closer2.
Once the installer has finished the voice line, you cancel closer 2 and downgrade to closer 1.

maybe try that, i did and it was very helpfull.

I've been having some issues with my self install. I have now sorted out the problem with the router and now the only site I can access is the telkom site. The call centre guy said I should go to the verifyadsl page and enter the details which I have done last night.

It said everything would be active in 30 minutes but this morning nothing has changed. Can still only access the telkom site.

Is this normal, anyone else had this experience?

Closer 2 is worth keeping if u use your landline. I speak under correction but calling from your landline is the cheapest option even to cell phones, unless u have "free" off-peak cellular minutes.

I'm just getting my first home ADSL installation, I've applied for my new line with Closer2 so I can dodge the installation cost.

The part that is bugging me in the original post is the free modem bit, surely they won't just give you a free modem if you don't use Telkom as your ISP? Or am I missing something?
If they do infact request that you sign one of their contracts etc. for them as your ISP to get the modem, are you aware of any penalties for cancellation?

its normally a 24 month contract and you get a modem. dunno about cancellation fees. maybe its the price of the modem. u should just get one for about R1000 and use another ISP but keep the line rental with Telkom.

Yeah just had a listen around and sounds like it's 'x'*how many months you have left+router cost...could ammount to a hefty sum! Will rather fork out the cash for a router and go with another ISP.
Figure I might just do it all through mweb with one of those 'all inclusive' packages and have them handle all the leg work?

Check out Cybersmart too (and all the others as well) if u sure u gonna use another ISP. They give a free router I think and u can get the installation organised by them too IIRC.

Hi all just like to know of the closer 1 otion still applies for a free line installation as this thread was strated over 3 years ago...?
Id like to know if it is still free installation and how much closer 1 costs ?

give telkom a call to confirm cos they are always changing stuff.
as for 1GB on browsing alone-that dont seem right. are u sure there aint no background downloads or uploads going on? are you using a bandwidth meter?

I believe it still applies, I did a new installation about 5/6 weeks back, it's called something different now - I cancelled mine yesterday, was abbout R30-something if I recall. Really not that much and saves you that R500-odd installation

Hard to keep up with the nest/cheapest option these days - changes so fast. Remember when a Nokia 9110 was THE ONLY phone to have, no question!
