Another question. Does anyone know an app to encode .mkv (Matroska) files? Specifically the 720p variety you see on the torrent sites :-)

All my searches for .mkv or matroska just turn up windows software.

koffiejunkie, you can use mplayer for mac to play the video but from what i remember last year, it was real slow on the low end macs ( i had a 1080p mkv video ). dont know about now.

You're looking to do this on your mini?

Decode is easy with perian - but dont know about encoding.

bam-bam - I can play them with anything really - even Quicktime. I'm looking to encode something to 720p mkv.

bwana, yes. I know, it won't be fast. But they, the mini is alone at home all day :) This is not for full length movies - just to test a frew things with short clips.

Incidently, the Mini isn't fast enough to playback 720p :(

ok guys plz dont blast me as its my first post in the mac section :)

how do i encode a .mkv to avi? i've tried various programs that dont work

ok im a windows user

*ducks*

koffiejunkie, i would imagine you could decode a video to 720p mkv but the original would have to be 1080p or higher than 720p, these 2 are the highest quality form of videos i know.

To encode videos to 720p would be a waste of time & quality.

Why would you wanna encode to 720p mkv ?

killadoob, if only i had a mkv file with me now to play around wif, i wud tell you.

But, koffiejunkie says mkv files will play with quicktime or other software, maybe you could try to convert them within the software like the quicktime, save as or export function.

The originals are 1080p. I want to make a short clip available for download to a friend who's low on bandwith, to test if her notebook is fast enough to play it, before I mail her the rest.

VLC can encode, but I have another problem with mine (described in another thread) - the interface is mostly in an asian language, and I cannot set it back. Blowing away the config files doesn't help. I suspect it's because I messed around with monolingual...

why dont you encode to H264 instead of mkv?

I thought mkv used H264? The way I understand mkv is just a container like avi.
Does it? Possibly, I dont know. But I do know that Quicktime will happily export to MP4 (h.264).

Or are you just determined to use Matroska?

No not particularly - just need the same format video and audio used. Which does limit my choices of container. I'll have to look into this tonight mp4 tonight - I'm not really familiar with it.

For Windows look up a free program called Super.

For Mac look up FFMPEGX (free).
or
Handbrake if you wanna rip DVDs.

Change your Mac OSX language settings back from Thai to English. :)

Everything *is* set to English. That's why I suspect monolingual screwed something up. Anyway, I'm going to do a fresh install soon. I've messed around in the terminal too much already :)
