UAV aerial drones -end of the crime problem?

Aerial Drones or UAVs. If we can deploy a few hundred of these it will be the end of the crime problem in South Africa as we know it.

There is always a solution to a problem: Mulla. Yes, that is right money. Money talks and all we have to do is find somebody willing to take the risk and pay him whatever needs to be paid. He will fly the UAV and tell everybody that it is his baby - he takes the rap.

As far as a DCA license is concerned - you probably mean some sort of US style FAA certification right? Well I spoke to a local UAV developer who sold a system to Wits university for R30 000 and he told me our local FAA chaps are so fedup with crime themselves that they are turning a "blind eye" so to speak to whole thing. Especially John Welch from the NPA http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/LegalPerspective won't give us hasseles.

But you are right nobody in his right mind with assets or something to loose is going to fly a UAV above Menlyn centre or whatever - http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/FrontingCompany to the rescue. There is alway some scheme or scam you can work out to get the job done. This is South AFrica after all.

DCA Department of Civil Aviation is not going to turn a "Blind Eye", especially not after the first accident, and yes if they do, who is going to prevent the criminals from flying their own armed drones.

Captainwifi, simple question.... once the drones "spot" something... how exactly are we going to catch the criminals... and then is the drone footage legally permissable in court?

Actually the law has a section for experimental craft that doesn't need any license. The trouble apparantly came in that if you sell it there was issues. This was a few years ago.
But UAVs are deployed in South Africa as we speak and being sold. CIVIL is the least of our worries since your fronting company will handle this. The person who takes repsonsibility is the one guilty - period. Of course we don't have to use petrol driven heavy weight drones but very light electric powered over residential areas. The real danger with drones is not really the stuff crashing into the ground, it would some idiot flying the thing at 10km straight into a boeing - then we have problems. But even this is such a remote threat that nobody is really to concerned.

People just don't realized what has recently become possible. None of this was really workable just 4 years ago - hobby UAV was just a pipe dream. Now we have 17year old students building drones that can fly from Jhb to Madagascar.

Follow the link here http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/UnmannedAerialVehicles to see how police departments are tracking criminals in real-time with drones. Any footage watermarked and time stamped will be legal in court. The whole idea with drones is to convince the criminals that the days of housebreaking are over - since you wont get away. You could even use model helicopters at the entrance and exist of streets to shoot their getaway cars with paintball.

But to have a stable video relay of the chopper camera you would need a Meshnetworking and DSLAM combination. We would probably use 1ghz for such a scheme. Interface a 1ghz/2.4ghz updown converter. It increases latency but the AODV will make up for it. In other words you need to create a small radius hotspot at the street entrance and relay the signal over the DSLAM network. You can't conrrol the chopper over 5km with a 2.4ghz signal due to to much interference. You also can't start using 1ghz over 5km - we will windup completely mucking -up the entire spectrum.

But a small radious 400m 1ghz interference free link will do. 35mhz RAdio control signals can be easily jammed locking up the receiver. I am talking now about human controled gyro stablilized model helicopters - no UAV stuff or GPS. The crooks are getting away with crime by simply driving away - blasting their windows with paintball might stop this.

Or another idea is build turrets on the street entrance and install pan/tilt paintball guns that will blast a car trying to get away.
