I would love to hear from people with careers in foreign countries...

    Are UNISA degrees widely accepted?

Wits has prob the best engineering school in the country. I guess you cant really say which one is the best. It depends on the departments. UJ has a very good BCom, Accounts dept, Wits has good Engineering and Sciences (their BCom is terrible), UCT has good business science and medicine etc. need to do some homework before deciding where to go.

    Go to UCT

All universities (every single one of them) are independently audited to ensure each and every single degree offered upholds a standard and warrants being offered as a degree. Every single degree offered is independantly audited by panels of specialists in those fields. Some of the universities (UCT, WITS, TUKS and many others) are also audited by a panel of international auditors and awarded international accreditation for some or all of their degrees offered. WITS, for example, has international accreditation for its Medical School as well as Engineering degrees. Each university is ranked internationally, and I can promise you that it is every university's - including UNISA's - aim to be a top 50 university in the world.

Do you even have a degree?

Many countries have a government department that assesses the strengths of educational qualifications from all countries. They also decide what the equivalent level is for their own system. For example; the old matric on Higher Grade with exemption would be higher than UK O-levels, but lower than A-levels (though these have changed now as well).

Definitely can go wrong with Wits or UCT.

UCT is indeed the highest ranking African varsity. UCT has climbed worldwide rankings from 257 in 2006 to now, 179. Wits ranks second best in Africa at 319 worldwide. World rankings are of course a matter of opinion and can be arguable. That’s for another thread.

I know UCT has the most A-rated scientists in Africa and is rated tops in R&D, if that matters to a person's opinion.

For interest sake, UCT worldwide ranks as follows per subject:

    171 Arts & Humanities
    182 Natural Sciences
    151 Social Sciences
    259 Engineering & IT
    148 Life Sciences & Biomedicine

Well UCT rocks in my books...the culture down there is totally wicked! I also had the chance to school at Wits..its good too. But I would return to UCT at the drop of a dime.

And for me UCT was really far..would take the Bus in Louis Trichardt (Limpopo) @ 09:00, get to Jozi @ +-15:00. Get on the CTN bus @ +-18:00...that was hectic. good thing I had friends from my hood down the as well.

The rankings are the “QS World University Rankings”. You can find them on www.topuniversities.com. Other rankings are provided by “academic ranking of world universities”.

You can also look at Studysa which has some profiles and rankings. Last time I checked, they were not up to date but should nonetheless make an interesting comparison of SA Educational institutions. http://www.studysa.co.za/contentpage.aspx?pageid=4137

It seems this is quite a reputable site...How can there be no subject rankings for commerce and law though?

I’m sure they do have ranking for Law and Business and probably fitted within those broad categories. My bet is that their methodology and definition places Law under “Arts & Humanities”.
