NOTE: iPhones with 3.1.2 out of the box (serial number starting with MCxxxxxx) ONLY support a TETHERED jailbreak for now.

TETHERED JAILBREAK = When the iTunes recovery logo appears every time you reboot the phone after jailbreaking with blackra1n RC3 or alternative.

You have two options:

- to re-run blackra1n RC3 every time you reboot the phone and are presented with this recovery logo (which proves very inconvenient)
- to restore the phone and lose the jailbreak

• How to: Enable SSH (wirelessly log into the phone and view hard drive contents)

First, you need to install "OpenSSH" from Cydia and reboot the phone.

Secondly, you need to grab WinSCP and install it..

Once you have done that, go to Wi-Fi settings on your iPhone and click the blue > arrow next to the Wi-Fi AP you are connected to. Take note of the "IP Address".

e.g. 10.0.0.2

Fire up WinSCP and you will be presented with a screen like this

Under "Host Name:" enter the IP Address (10.0.0.2 in my case)
Under "User name" enter "root"
Under "Password" enter "alpine"

Click Save if you wish to save the information.

Then click "Login". This usually takes a few minutes the first time to generate keys.. It will seem as if nothing at all is happening, but it is Just wait till you are presented with a dialog as such:

Be sure to click "Yes"

Now you should see the iPhone file system on the right of the screen, and your PC file system on the left of the screen

It should look something like this

NOTE: If your iPhone locks, all data transfers are put on hold.. I suggest setting Auto-lock to never when you are using SSH
NOTE2: Your iPhone IP address usually changes, so if you are having problems logging in, check to see if the IP address hasn't changed in Wi-Fi settings

If you jailbroke with blackra1n and can still not access the root partition, then download something called "afc2add" from Cydia which fixes this and allows root access again.

• Replace Vodacom Carrier logo with Fxit_Man's cool logo

1. Open DiskAid and change the folder to the root folder (bottom left of the app)

2. Navigate to the System/Library/Carrier Bundles/Vodafone_za.bundle/

3. MAKE A BACKUP OF THIS SOMEWHERE ON YOUR PC (if you ever wanted to replace the standard Vodacom logo)

4. Replace the FSO_CARRIER_Vodacom.png and Default_CARRIER_Vodacom.png with the ones provided in this .zip

5. Respring the phone

People can just copy this to their carrier bundles folder, and then just create the symbolic link:

ln -s MTN_za.bundle 65510

65510 is MTN's MNC/MMC code

I tried it on my OS3 iphone and its working like a charm

• How to add custom ringtones (after jailbreak)

You must jailbreak your device before using this method:

1. Right click the song you want in iTunes, convert to AAC

2. Right click the newly converted song and click "show in windows explorer"

3. Rename the song from ".m4a" to ".m4r" extension

4. Transfer to /Library/Ringtones folder via Diskaid (instructions for Diskaid on front page)

To trim the song, I use something like Audacity for Windows (free app) before importing into iTunes


You can use something a bit more "noob-proof" such as iRinger if you wish. This is just what I use (prefer it much more) and thought i'd share

• How to: Restore your iPhone if it does not boot and iTunes does not pick it up

This could be caused by dud software downloaded from Cydia, failed upgrade processes etc. Not to panic:

First try put the phone in recovery mode, if that does not work, then try put the phone into DFU mode.

Its a great device - mine arrived last week.

"The iPhone doesn’t register most key presses until you *release* your finger. But Andrew discovered that the Shift and Punctuation keys register their taps on the *press-down* instead.

i just remembered this handy Safari tip:

When you are browsing, to quickly return to the top of the page where the address bad is located, tap the thin gray bar located at the top of the screen once (the one with the network, wifi, battery icons on it)

Conserve Battery life:

If you have enabled SSH on your iPhone, be sure to download iToggle in order to switch SSH OFF when you are not using this as it drains battery hecticly

yeah i was suprised wen i saw there was no bluetooth file transfer for the iPhone...
but im sure an app will be developed sooner or later to allow this

and another downside, no Mxit...

but i use my PC and other phone for that

THeres no bluetooth profile.
Download Photoboard. One of the best apps I've come accross.
And add more sources on the isntaller.
Also get iPhysics and more levels for it

I reckon in the South African context importing and cracking falls under the greater heading of tips and tricks ...so share?

I searched for an iPhone using google product search paid with google checkout, it shipped to my US mailing address I bought, they shipped it to my house...easy

Just make sure that the iPhone is not 1.1.2 because AFAIK there is no way to unlock iPhones that came with that firmware..

If it came with 1.1.1 or older, it is posible to unlock and even upgrade to 1.1.2 and unlock but not if the iPhone originally came with 1.1.2

You will be able to tell by looking at the serial number - if the 4th to 5th numbers are 46 or above

I found this which only works on OSX though...

I set up a new group in my address book, then synced my old phone to that group using iSync. Then later synced that group to the iPhone. Easy as pie, took about 10 minutes for a little over 300 contacts.

If your old mobile with all the contacts supports iSync it should work.

Yep, I got myself the 1.1.2 OTB iPhone(there was no 1.1.1 stock at the time)

It's not possible yet to unlock it via software methods like anysim, but it is possible with a hardware sim solution, I bought myself a stealth sim which will arrive later this month, by that time there could be a software unlock too.

I'm using my phone as an iPod Touch for now.

Just to note:

The method i saw them doing it in Dubai was to use a TurboSIM.

Its not as convinient as software unlock but i guess it beats not being able to use the phone part of the iPhone

Im sure you can order one from overseas..shouldnt be too expensive but then again i have no idea

How to get the voicemail button to call voice mail ...


Step 1: Find your carrier’s voicemail number is (for example, vodacom voicemail number is 121)

Step 2: Click the phone button in your iPhone. (Green one, bottom left)

Step 3: Click the keypad tab.

Step 4: Type the following: *5005*86*yourvoicemailphonenumber#

Step 5: Hit the call button and wait a few seconds.

Step 6: Hit the voicemail button, and it will now call your voicemail.
