Bandwidth theft - procedure and contacts to solve

i see there have been quite a number of threads relating to bandwidth theft but it does not seem as if many people have got satisfactory results

i believe that the SAPS now have a specific form dealing with this kind of crime (at least they do in the western cape) but it seems that the problem is finding the right person at the ISP to help out

does anyone have any contacts of people who can assist with this? I am in particular looking for the number of someone in telkom / telkominternet who is authorised to assist users who have had bandwidth stolen...

    any help greatly appreciated

    SF

Seriously, though. Bandwith theft can bedone without someone's help at the ISP. Some ISP's like @lantic don't even have access to the passwords. Their database is encrypted.

The theves get your details by lookiing for a IP address thats open with a port sniffer. One they have your IP they have access to the router, and believe it or not, most people DON'T change their router's default password so its a open door. Teh hacker then uses a program to decrypt the password to your ADSL account on the router itself!

I've seen it! Its that simple! So change the damn password!

Surfer_Rosa I'm going to suggest that this thread be made a sticky because the issue of 'bandwidth' theft seems to be a topic of discussion more and more on MyADSL.

Can someone else confirm the existence of a specific form for 'ADSL bandwidth theft' at the SAPS? Could someone possibly get one if they exist and scan it to place online? Antitrust and I'm sure Hellkom will gladly host if needs be.

If people are stupid enough NOT to change their default router password, let them get capped.

Btw, you don't "decryped" the password, it is in the HTML source since the web GUI is HTML/js driven.

Maybe Telkom should lower their bandwith costs for a start, that will instantly resolve this problem.

So if I dont lock my house, it serves me right if I am robbed blind? .... You arrogrant ass.... Just 'cos not everyone KNOWS HOW to lock down the router makes them targets for your dumbass attitude and theft?

There are ALOT of non IT people on ADSL who rely on Telkom or their IT friends to set their routers up... so you say "If the locksmith doesnt know what he is doing - then the home-owner deserves to be robbed"

I hope the cops get your port number someday and visit

Question ? What if I use the router in bridge mode, so there is no password
on the router. I can connect to more than one isp , can I still be hacked into?

    Bandwidth Theft -

I have also experience bandwidth theft. The thing that irritates me the most is that Telkom cuts you off and you have to buy additional bandwidth from them. I have emailed ICASA as well as some people in goverment. Maybe if enough people email them, they will respond and do something about it.

How Telkom helps with bandwidth theft

I am not sure who it is who used all my bandwidth, but a couple of things are clear to me about Telkom:

Telkom does not take abuse seriously

They almost never respond to emails, and on the odd occasion that they do respond, nothing is actually done (Earlier this year they tracked down the phone number of the person illegally using my account and nothing was done to my knowledge)

They offer a very low level of customer service and support (Their staff who sell additional bandwidth are excellent :-)

They purposefully do not have any contact phone numbers so that a customer cannot follow up any of their queries related to abuse

I believe that this has become their policy so that customers like myself who have had their bandwidth cut off have no other option but to buy additional bandwidth

They offer no possible solution to switching a customers bandwidth back on once it has been cut off.

The call centre staff transfer you around to a whole bunch of different operators and phone numbers, but there is not a single person who can help with any switched-off-bandwidth issues, other that the people who sell you more bandwidth
