  • Hey Centrino,

I don't log in too MyBB much anymore, and this 'conversation' thing is new to me, so my apologies for the seriously delayed response.

I import plenty of parts annually for my own cars. It's not my occupation.

The local scene is a bit too dispersed and has other issues affecting, so many people who've looked at importing various parts commercially have given it up.

I'm curious...what vehicle are you after? Kit car? 'Old' car?

I'm not an expert on this, but I would suggest you take a look at the SARS 'site...

In general, I expect to pay as follows:

    Parts + shipping + 20% Duties + 14% VAT OVER AND ABOVE
Sometimes Customs rips me a new one, and sometimes I just get charged a processing fee. There's no surefire way to bypass this that I've discovered - it's luck of the draw.

The Duties you pay depend on what the parts are, and whether they're new or used.

If you were to strip the car, and do multiple shipments (to make it less obvious), you stand a better chance of lessening the Customs impact.

Surface shipping is by far the cheapest, but takes anywhere from 3/4 weeks to 3 months.

LHD imports are illegal and you won't get them licensed for road use.

There are some factors to consider with importing a private car...I think you need to own the car for atleast 2 years overseas in a private capacity before importing.

As I say, this is all rough info',. Perhaps try getting hold of the applicable motoring authority here...SAMCA, AA, SAVVA, etc.

    Cheers, and good luck.

    Nic.
