    I saw your comments requesting literature about evolution/cosmology. I'm going to echo the other posters and suggest The Greatest Show On Earth by Richard Dawkins. You could also use this to start off with.

    For cosmology, I very strongly recommend Carl Sagan, as the other guys said. He was truly an inspirational man. Get Cosmos and The Demon-Haunted World. I think they're absolutely essential reading for any literate person with even a modicum of interest in knowledge and the world we find ourselves in.

    You could also look into The Grand Design by Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow, as well as A Universe from Nothing: Why There Is Something Rather Than Nothing by Lawrence Krauss. Fascinating stuff.
