Vodacom plans to turn off 2G in South Africa

I would hope that this is the kind of thing where the WOAN could help with a shared 2G network where all the operators could have their legacy devices roam.

Huawei helped African politicians to spy on enemies - Report

What's the consistent rule here? Are companies not supposed to give access if requested by the local government? If Cisco installs networking equipment in the UK, would they resist a demand by the UK government to enable monitoring of certain traffic? I could understand the outrage if it was...

#COOL-20190812-291541 If it hadn't worked from the start I probably would have thought to ask questions like "how do I need to connect? do you use PPPoE etc?". But having it just work fine for 40 days with a direct DHCP client on the ONT totally surprised me when it then stopped working.

Cool Ideas Fibre ISP – Feedback Thread 2

I chose the option when I ordered not to be sent a router, and so Cool Ideas never sent me a router. That should trigger some flag in your system that I'd need to be sent PPPoE details.

Cool Ideas Fibre ISP – Feedback Thread 2

Please Cool Ideas, fix your onboarding processes. Why was I never sent my PPPoE details from the start? Joined over Frogfoot, was sent no information, so just plugged my own router into the ONT and it got an IP address via DHCP. Has been working like that for 40 days or so, and then it suddenly...

@PBCool Internet has been dead for 24 hours+ and had submitted a ticket (#COOL-20190812-291541), but received no response or follow-up. Makes me unsure if someone is working on it or if it's just disappeared into the void.

Emergency plans if Cell C goes bust

Maybe they can just turn Cell C into the WOAN and have it immediately be reincarnated as a typical loss-making state owned enterprise.

5G is not a network — Andile Ngcaba

This is a fantasy that is pushed by analysts and plays into the desire telecom companies have to be more than just "dumb pipes" so they can extract value from higher up the chain. Sadly for them any platform built directly on top of a telecom companies specific network would have such a limited...

Cool Ideas Fibre ISP – Feedback Thread 2

What is happening with the routing? I was complaining yesterday that the same IP (151.101.193.140) was routing via both Cape Town (4ms) and Joburg (20ms) randomly, and now it seems to be up to 143ms (London?). This is all with Fastly CDN IP blocks and covers things like Twitch / Reddit / Gawker...

Cool Ideas Fibre ISP – Feedback Thread 2

Based in Cape Town on Frogfoot. This cannot be right that packets going to the same IP address are going sometimes via Cape Town and sometimes via Joburg. I've done multiple traceroutes to Twitch and have taken hops 3, 4 and 5 to show the variable routing that crops up: traceroute to twitch.tv...

Cool Ideas Fibre ISP – Feedback Thread 2

I'm in Cape Town, deep South on Frogfoot. One other thing is if I ping something like reddit: That switch from ~4ms to ~20ms and back again keeps happening and traceroute will report different route paths. WinMTR will show just the one router but with the variance between best and worst...

Cool Ideas Fibre ISP – Feedback Thread 2

That stuff seems ok. Software queues are off, fast path is on, it's a hAP ac2 so it has a decently fast ARM CPU and sits at 0%-2% while traffic is going. I can also do iperfs to the Cool Ideas server and the speeds are fine even when I set relatively small UDP packet sizes (causing it to...

Thanks, I can't get anywhere close to max with Steam. Have tried Cape Town, Johannesburg and international servers. Network traffic on the Mikrotik shows it bouncing between 115Mbps and 135 Mbps, and Twitch will start to buffer at the same time. Going to http://speedtest.mybroadband.co.za/ and...

Cool Ideas Fibre ISP – Feedback Thread 2

Is there a 100 Mbps international or other limit on the 200/200 Frogfoot "Nitro Cool" accounts (as with the 500/1Gbps ones)? The local MyBroadband speed test correctly goes to 200Mbps but in practical usage I see behaviour with multiple streams or multiple machines where it seems like there is...
