    Crypto explosion in South Africa

I'd have no clue how to manage the SARS "did you buy or sell any crypto" question when I've bought groceries with crypto from my own wallet, bout some more at Luna and transferred that out the same day. I'm just not seeing how this is possible. Imagine SARS asking cash uses to declare every time...

    Mashtastic in SA discussion

Yes you are behind a slight hump and missing that high site on CT side. Good news is one of the first high sites being planned is going to be by the Hawequa repeater site so we are hoping that would light up Paarl, Worcester and Kraaifontein.

Absolute Hosting offers the lowest .co.za domain registration costs

Quite true that it is POPIA issue, actually. I noticed recently when I changed providers and had to revert my contact info for the validation, all my personal info appeared online for that day or two again for my .co.za.

There is one high site in Cape Town that connects many nodes already - I'm finding the broadcasts reasonably OK and reaching a few people. We're trying to now get nodes up above Durbanville and on Constantiaberg - but needing to sponsor the devices and get permission from the site owners. Then...

Absolute Hosting offers the lowest .co.za domain registration costs

The difference it DOES make is if you look up the domain info. Without it, you see the person's full address, phone numbers, etc. With it, you only see the domain registrar's contact details. That is enough of an important difference for me, and pretty essential today.

It's not run by anyone really as no central service - many people sue it on their own on a sheep farm to connect between points where there are zero comms. It is open source, so anyone can adapt and build a service on top of it. We have a brewery in Cape Town that has 4 active nodes, and I'd...

Absolute Hosting offers the lowest .co.za domain registration costs

Frikkadel is not on the list, and is cheaper than those providers (WhoIsPrivacy included). Any domain name costing needs to specify if WhoIsPrivacy is included or excluded. My previous provider charged a substantial extra amount for it. I was surprised to experience that moving domain providers...

    South Africans dumping DStv

Kodak comes to mind - entertainment has changed and this model is dying off. I'm pretty sure it is the sport lovers keeping and paying for DSTV. For movies and TV shows you can sign up with a different streaming provider every month and watch what you want, when you want. I couldn't imagine...

Road Accident Fund's effect on petrol prices

This is the first I have ever heard about "where third-party vehicle insurance is mandatory for motorists". Why have I been paying for it for decades already? My motorcycle was downgraded to fire, theft and 3rd party but it is R89 pm. My car is around R400pm inc 3rd party insurance. Where does...

Department of Labour's uFiling platform has been offline for over a month

Very sad that yet again the most needy must suffer. A Great improvement would be if the DG and relevant Minister also did not receive any pay for the month's that recipients don't get paid. How would the Minister feel if they also had to go stand in the queue for their pay? There is such a...

Speak for yourself - I've not had WhatsApp installed for years now - life goes on perfectly well with Telegram, Signal, RCS, etc.

Security flaw leaves South African National Defence Force's (SANDF's) computer management system exposed

Incredible that a military organisation just awards tenders on cost alone (I expect that from municipalities) without interrogating exactly how something will be done, protected, etc. The military are usually notorious for preventing connectivity. I remember years ago the SANDF refused to even...

The quiet death of South Africa's first modern electric car

The irony is, these cars were way too far ahead of the times then. How different things could have been if the timing was maybe a bit better, and they had investors. But that said I'm not sure they could have been the Tesla's of the world today as our local economy clearly is not good enough to...

VoIP providers still have a competitive edge

Of course some of us don't use WhatsApp so it is not going to reach everyone like SMS/RCS does (well RCS in the future).

Vishing the most significant contributor to banking fraud

They tried it on me last week and posed as the Nedbank fraud centre - yes they had my cheque account number (so that's not from an online card purchase) and my phone number (from an old credit application maybe or from SARS?). What tore it for me though was their claim that an online gambling...

Vitality Money clients can get up to 50% off on their fuel spend

I moved to Bonitas BonSave. Do have to say one downside with them is really difficult admin / follow ups / getting replies. But there cover is better for what I need. A medical aid does need careful comparison based on a specific family's needs. There is also a waiting period of about 3 months...

Vitality Money clients can get up to 50% off on their fuel spend

Oh yes, they are true, but on more expensive flights. Same reason I'm letting my BA miles die. I found that by searching for flights on Kayak I can get flights way cheaper than using my BA miles on BA flights.

Vitality Money clients can get up to 50% off on their fuel spend

Thing is it can never just be about what you get out, but has to be balanced with what it costs you along with what benefits. After 20 years with Discovery Health I cancelled my medical aid at end of 2023. The reason was I could get an additional R9,000 annual savings for R2,000pm less. So all...
