South Africa's electrical goods market flooded with counterfeit products

Crabtree is about the only electrical brand that is quality. I give them credit for not cheapening their product. Clearline is also excellent at the higher end.

Haval and Chery shaking up South Africa’s motoring industry

Apparently, the Chinese brands will launch more than 20 new models in 2025. The current models seem to be them dipping their toes in the water. Setting up the brand, establishing reseller agreements, testing the supply chain for parts, and investing in landing parts (I know that when Kia...

    Instagram warns about sextortion

This is so sick and insensitive. I do have to wonder if your online bravado would translate into offline bravery when standing in front of a parent whose child has killed themselves and telling them that it was their fault.

The company renting remote security guns to South African households and businesses

Yup, massive liability issue waiting to happen. Just look at the laws around pools. Kid retrieving ball from property gets eye shot out... enjoy that legal fun land.

    Temu's business model under fire

Nope, it's hitting the small guys as well. They're not afraid to steal a design from anywhere (local designers, design students, etc. People who really could do with the money). If it works as a test, they scale it. No credit or financial benefit goes to the originator. Copyright and trademark...

Mteto Nyati says claims of sabotage within Eskom power stations are highly exaggerated

Sabotage "vanished" with the ex-vice president. https://www.timeslive.co.za/politics/2023-03-17-dd-mabuza-is-the-senior-politician-involved-in-eskom-corruption-das-steenhuisen/

Bank rewards systems compared - July 2024

Same here. Roughly corresponds with the reduction of places where you can actually spend them. Now I just leave them to accrue less and less value, hoping the value will eventually become big enough that some Smurf actuary has a bit of a wobble about the perceived value of eBucks.

    Provider for Mobile Backup

What do you mean by Opt-in sim? This is my 4th MTN card registered with Afrihost that has been disconnected. It would have been nice to know.

    Provider for Mobile Backup

I have a fibre line and a mobile router as a failover. I have been using an Afrihost SIM in the mobile router; the issue, though, is that every 90 days, you need to buy voice data from MTN to stop the number from being recycled. (It's actually in the T&C's). I keep on forgetting, and keep on...

FNB chat support issues blamed on increased user demand

The irony dripping from this entire statement is beautiful. Didn't it occur to you that maybe it's pretty much exactly the same for everyone else here?

FNB chat support issues blamed on increased user demand

No, but seriously... @epah . I thought your comebacks sounded like those of an FNB employee, but if you were an employee, you would be smart enough to know that private wealth is a battleground for banks and you wouldn't be insulting them. It costs a significant amount to acquire one wealth...

FNB chat support issues blamed on increased user demand

That's really amusing…Chill man it’s just a couple of k, the bank will definitely sort it. Clearly you have never used them for complex transactions. A few thousand in double debits App and website reflecting two completely different amounts and transactions, and different outstanding...

FNB chat support issues blamed on increased user demand

They had a massive screw-up on the 29th of July outage and double-debited tons of card transactions on the weekend after payday. They are only reversing those transactions now. I am sure a few clients might have wanted to know what was happening and why there was a delay, as it is the heaviest...

Logistics and customs expert says the Temu and Shein loophole is not what everyone thinks

They are hurting the local economy. Nothing they do aside from shipping is local. Their manufacturing, marketing, and infrastructure are all offshore, so every cent you spend on their products is sucked out of the economy. So it's not just clothing; it impacts every sector because counting all...

Majority of jobs in banking sector risk being made redundant by AI

I think it makes the case stronger... It will need all the energy it can get and as close to the source as possible. The dramatic rise in property prices around nuclear plants in the US is indicative of this.

Majority of jobs in banking sector risk being made redundant by AI

"Goldstuck said it would never replace the human touch that many banking clients will still require." ...not exactly the highest of benchmarks quite frankly.

City of Johannesburg said it implemented load reduction to prevent grid from collapsing

Thanks for clearing that up. I was actually using the example to illustrate the confusing nature of the terms used… but anyway. Load Reduction = Highly localised load shedding Grid Collapse (in this context) = Stuff catches fire Btw: Specific things like motors need their specified current...

City of Johannesburg said it implemented load reduction to prevent grid from collapsing

I think they mean "collapses," as in it literally breaks down mechanically from being overloaded (read: heat > fire). This is not the traditional definition of a Grid collapse, where the 50Hz frequency falls below a sustainable amount and the grid trips. These guys are unqualified to deal with...

City of Johannesburg said it implemented load reduction to prevent grid from collapsing

Can someone explain how this works: "Sekwalla explained that load reduction doesn’t remove power entirely from an area but reduces the supply of electricity to these areas." What is the exact technical implementation? I can't seem to find it anywhere. No article has actually bothered to explain...

SARS announces increase in maximum value of personal goods imports

Aramex Global Shopper. MyUS only does US and UK. Aramex is slower, and sometimes some admin as they don't always look at forms, but I have used them to ship from multiple countries in Asia. Their rates are excellent. AGS gives you post boxes in around 40 countries.
