SA smart plugs that can be flashed with Tasmota

Got my 3 ESPHome plugs today. So far so good. I like the build quality and onboarding is very simple.

BYD claims it has developed a 5-minute car charger

Nice, you don't even need these everywhere. Just along the main routes (and maybe some way to detect if the car being plugged in actually supports the higher charging speed, if not they should use the slower chargers).

The price of driving versus using the Gautrain

Useless comparison, who buys a car and only uses it for work. Comparison should be cost of driving the distance and possibly time taken

    IT Workup

I was expecting at least some negative comments from those screwed over, unless those are being deleted

    IT Workup

Lol WTF. Did someone buy the branding and continue as a new business, seems unlikely.....

    IT Workup

Really? Is there some post or announcement for this?

    IT Workup

So randoms in the building are now fulfilling orders? Guess everybody that ordered better hurry on down before that is stopped.

    Smart Switches AND Smart Bulbs

Using the light switch is going to turn the bulb off. You could bypass the light switch so that the bulb always has power and use the light switch to virtually turn the bulb on or off (I would consider this dangerous because the only way to cut power to the bulb would be via the DB board). You...

Gondongwana would have scrapped luxury goods tax on cheaper smartphones in budget speech

I predict no taxes on smartphones below R500, or some other low value to make it essentially ****ing useless.

    Smart Light Switches

No feedback that you have pressed the button. You can't feel for the button either. And I don't think they look that nice either

    Smart Light Switches

Sonoff M5, unless you like those awful glass touch switches

    Car running on radio waves

That picture of him being poisoned reminds me of the hospital pictures of Brad Pitt. This is like the announcement of solar panels that generate power at night. Drilling into the details you realise it is so miniscule that it might as well not exist.

Help Us Shape Our Future Offerings! What Smart Home Tech Do You Use in 2025?

    1. Wi-Fi, The only other protocols I would be interested is one that has significantly better range than Wifi to reach areas with weak WiFi signal. 2. ESPHome and Home Assistant. Don't trust cloud linked services (data, security and future support wise). 3. Reliability of cloud based services...

The true impact of electric cars on the environment

Those batteries are currently powering my house, look up Revov.

Eskom says customers' solar systems that are not registered with the power utility are illegal

Are you actually surprised they said this? 😳 Did you ask SANRAL to come repair your driveway? Or the department of water to come fix the leak under your sink?

Labour law specialist Craig Kirchmann gives thoughts on Wanatu's Afrikaans-only hiring policy

So offering a service where the driver is fluent in Afrikaans, but somehow only hiring people that meet that requirement is discrimination? So offering an Afrikaans language teaching service and then requiring that the teachers speak Afrikaans is discrimination?

Cyber extortionists increasingly targetting younger victims on social media

That's why I always send a picture of the biggest dick I can find on the internet. If they release it, people are either impressed or know it is fake

Twytch to increase e-hailing safety using blockchain

And none of that is relevant to ride hailing IMO. This is just some startup desperately trying to convince people that it has a place in the market, while the actual buzzword these days is AI.

Twytch to increase e-hailing safety using blockchain

How is this different from storing the data in a normal database? Blockchain does not know if the data provided is forged or not. And altered data should not be a concern, just keep the original.

Home Assistant : Q&A, Tips & Tricks, Your Configs

Yup looks like DIY is required. I already use Sonoff 4CH relays to control the irrigation zones, but along one zone I have varied irrigation needs for the various sections. I also want to avoid running power to it so need to see if a mini solar panel and battery can power the relay
