South Africans want Starlink, regulations be damned

For step 8, do you require a address in the country you sign up in, and also, do you have to use a VPN to do it? Just for interest sake I just checked Sydney Australia, I see they have refurbished hardware as well at 50% the cost of a new kit, 299 Ausie Dollars.

    Discovery Vitality 2023

I've always been a Apple user. My old Apple Watch broke, so I got a Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 from my sister after she upgraded. In the process of setting it up, I downloaded the Galaxy Watch app as well as the Samsung Health app on my iPhone and it seams the data is syncing from the watch...

iPhone 14, US version which comes with eSIM only in SA?

Hi all Heading says it all, will the iPhone 14 sold in the USA which only supports a eSIM work on SA networks? I know Vodacom recently announced eSIM support for all customers including prepaid, not sure about MTN. A friend who's currently in the US wants to buy himself a 14 if it will work here.

Afrihost - Pure Fibre Feedback Thread Part 2

I got a Huawei WS5200 wifi router when I signed up for Afrihost fibre way back, is this router locked to Afrihost's fibre network? I moved house and no longer have fibre, I have wireless P2P internet now, but I'm unable to use this router with my wireless internet which also has a PPPoE...

What's the best way to complain about poor Vodacom signal?

Hi all I'm in the Dinokeng Game Reserve just outside Pretoria. As the crow flies, there is a Vodacom tower 2 km from me, but yet the last 2 or 3 weeks we had very bad and some times even no signal at all. Yesterday was probably the worst so far, there was no signal for 90% of the day, none at...

    All things Shelly

They basically said they can't sell it yet, I can't remember the exact wording, but it was pretty obvious that it's the certification issue.

    All things Shelly

I emailed shellysa.co.za a while ago and since then I could never find someone stocking the Duo RGBW in E27, so assume it is still the case.

    All things Shelly

Anyone know if any of the local places will have black Friday deals on their Shelly stuff? P.S. Another brain dead one on the local certification. You get both the white and RGBW in GU10, but only the white in E27, it seams the RGBW E27 doesn't have certification.

CBI Astute Power Monitor / Switch -- Tasmotized!

I see the specs say the Astute ASC can handle a 10A inductive load. I've got a 1.5 kW pressure pump I want to use it on, the pump label says it draws 8.1A, but I'm sure start up current is more. Questions, will the ASC be able to handle higher than 10A start up currents and will the ASC be...

    Smart Weather Meter

Ja I know the Davis way of measuring rain with the tipping spoon is the most accurate, pro stations costing 10 times more use the same method to measure rain. But then I guess we should ask ourselves not very accurate compared to what? How accurate is the normal old style rain gauges we put...

    Smart Weather Meter

I first saw a few reviews on the Tempest 2 or 3 years ago. My first thought was also that it sounds too good to be true, way too much going on in that single box. I thought to give it some time and see how the company develops, but it looks like they have boomed. A few days ago I spoke to a guy...

    All things Shelly

Can’t you link the bulb and relay so they then work together as a unit?

    All things Shelly

I thought to do indoor bulbs first and then add relays to the switches later. I have 2 switches for outdoor spotlights where I will fit relays from the start. BTW does Shelly have something for ceiling fans?

    All things Shelly

What’s the opinion on the Shelly Duo RGBW bulbs? Since they cost the same as the white ones, I figured I’d just get the RGBW ones for all over, just because. Spec wise it looks like the white performance on both is similar, so any reason not to?

Multiple times already, they remove the listings only to put it back a few weeks later.

    All things Shelly

The opposite is unfortunately also true. Baofeng radios being sold with false ICASA type approval stickers by reputable places like Takealot BTW, is one example which comes to mind.

    All things Shelly

Just playing devils advocate, I’m all for rules and regulations. With that being said I bet if each and every person go look threw their house now, they’ll find many electrical items with no certification markings at all, many many reasons for insurance to deny a claim. I met a guy a few years...

    All things Shelly

How would anyone know, if those sold in SA have no certification markings on them and look identical to those coming from EU? Are you expected to save the packaging for your insurance in case there’s a claim one day? How many other devices in our homes doesn’t carry certification, do you check...

    Smart Weather Meter

    All things Shelly

Does the Shelly products purchased locally actually have ICASA stickers / markings on the items themselves or only on the packaging? Being involved in a different industry which also requires ICASA type approval on products, I know exactly what farce ICASA approval has become, they don\t...
