There's already a parody/tribute about Hitler being informed that Bruno Ganz has died:

Eskom burned R100m of diesel a day to keep lights on this week

Just out of curiousity, looking at the cost per kW/h: Installed capacity 2,000,000 kW Assuming R600m of diesel would last 7 days at 15 hours per day R600,000,000 / 2,000,000 / 7 / 15 or roughly R3 per kW/h Not as expensive as I thought, but that excludes capital costs and maintenance on the...

Eskom burned R100m of diesel a day to keep lights on this week

No specific figures in the public domain, but the Eskom details for Ankerlig and Gourikwa peak diesel power turbines are extensive: http://www.eskom.co.za/sites/heritage/Pages/ANKERLIG-AND-GOURIKWA.aspx At R10+ per litre (not sure if fuel levy is payable), that is R300 million per power plant...

Eskom and BEE: A total eclipse of the brain

Another useful summary article, pointing the blame for Eskom on cadre deployment and corruption (not BEE directly). See: https://www.news24.com/Columnists/GuestColumn/the-eskom-crisis-is-the-ancs-fault-20190214

    Old UPS stock?

The only way to properly test the charging capacity of a lead-acid battery is to discharge it under load or normal use. You may be lucky, and other methods may offer useful guidance, but there is no certainty otherwise. They should come with a 6-12 month limited warranty, but for anything...

[14/02/19] The probability of loadshedding is "low" for Friday

So, to summarise: 1. Eskom has not yet fixed most of the broken coal-fired power stations. It has sufficient supplies of diesel to run the open-cycle gas turbine plants for fifteen hours a day, at enormous cost, just to keep the lights on. 2. Load shedding has temporarily slipped into the...

[14/02/19] The probability of loadshedding is "low" for Friday

There is a tremendous amount of public information provided by Eskom on the Ankerlig and Gourikwa (Mossel Bay) peaking turbine power plants: http://www.eskom.co.za/sites/heritage/Pages/ANKERLIG-AND-GOURIKWA.aspx However it does not mention the supply constraints of running the plants up to 15...

[14/02/19] The probability of loadshedding is "low" for Friday

Apparently a shipload (literally) of diesel was delayed on Monday, due to limited docking facilities in Mossel Bay harbour: https://www.businesslive.co.za/bd/national/2019-02-14-sa-waits-while-eskom-diesel-stands-in-line-for-offload/ Edit: Article was not pay-walled when I first viewed it...

Eskom and BEE: A total eclipse of the brain

This article claims that the blame should not be laid solely on BEE or cadre deployment, but the repeated hollowing out of institutional memory at Eskom, that has led to dysfunction: https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/opinionista/2019-02-15-eskom-and-the-unseen-spider-web/

    Rain and storm for Cpt

Dam levels are normal for this time of year, and current consumption causes the levels to drop approximately 1.5% per week. This includes agricultural use which seems quite high, but only lasts for about 4 months in summer. The currently total is 57.4% as at 11 Feb 2019...

    Old UPS stock?

Yes, its easy to replace the batteries, but they often make up half the cost of a UPS.

    Old UPS stock?

UPS batteries are notorious for failing, consider them as 'disposable' (recyclable) items. My cousin has several (ex-office supply stock) from the last round of load-shedding a decade ago, but almost all the batteries are dead.
