Vumatel - Migrating from Mind The Speed --> Afrihost

Great service from @AfriNatic via PM - answered all my migration questions and assisted with placing the order. I'll update here once I've moved over ;)

Vumatel - Migrating from Mind The Speed --> Afrihost

I've given notice to Mind The Speed - my last day will be the end of the month. Do I just wait for that day --> sign up via the Afrihost portal (and I'm then instantly connected) ---> or is there more to it in terms fo downtime / prep? Thanks!

Telkom vs Afrihost — The battle to provide South Africa's cheapest fibre packages

Pricing is wrong 200/200 and 1000/200 on Afrihost are not the same price (R1147). The 1000/200mbps is actually R1447.

Pick n Pay ‘AIM’ brand TVs

Thanks - but in the end I just took the refund. The process is a PITA and they expect the customer to run around for them. I'd rather just vote with my wallet, and not buy PnP products again - i've let them know about the experience though (doubt they care though).

Pick n Pay ‘AIM’ brand TVs

Pray you don’t need to do any returns. Just returned a faulty 58” I bought from PNP online. 1.) you call customer care and nobody knows the returns process 2.) you get told they’ll collect the unit for assessment 3.) they call you back and say they were mistaken and that you have to take it...

    Deco M4: Ethernet Halves Speed?

I helped a friend with his Deco setup - he had a similar bottleneck - seems that QoS somehow got enabled on the router and throttled the WAN port to 100mbps... Perhaps check that?

Should you give your salary slip

Even worse - I got it wrong, it's 45% - went back to look! https://www.accountancysa.org.za/beware-of-45-tax-on-restricted-shares-in-start-ups/ I'm not quite at your level ;) I was a L5 (a CSEII) - which meant I would have probably had to stick around for the 3-4 year mark to progress to...

Should you give your salary slip

Definitely treated as a flat 40% in ZA - not sure why. I even tried to get it paid to my UK acc's as a dual citizen - nope they don't like that :p Fair - but you also need to consider that after year 2 - you lose 25% of your salary (which you definitely don't regain with 2% increases). So if I...

Should you give your salary slip

Pretty close to being spot on I'd think - I'd never been in danger of PIP myself, but I had seen other engineers go through it. As for increases I had a 2%, others had 0% (and I found that it seemed to be aimed at US inflation, vs South African where my salary was actually being decreased - due...

Should you give your salary slip

As others have said restricted stock units. Basically shares they grant (usually worked out at X rand value, and equivalent number of share granted). At AWS as an example you get X RSU's (on top of a base salary / sign on bonus (distributed monthly over 2 year period) - but you can't sell them...

    2018 Renault/Dacia Duster (Gen 2)

I'm not so fussed about manual vs auto - but I'm in two minds whether to grab one of these now or wait for the new Mahindra Thar (which is likely a year or two away due to production delays in India)...

    2018 Renault/Dacia Duster (Gen 2)

So TL;DR - is the new version worth the money? Should I wait if i'm in the market for a 4x4 model in the next year?

    Afrihost: Github speed un-usable

Do you want a free VPS? - Always free - from Oracle

Afaik I'm using 200GB on the ARM instance - but I'm only running 1 instance in my account (4vCPU, 24GB RAM, 200GB disk). It hasn't billed me yet but maybe I should triple check.

Do you want a free VPS? - Always free - from Oracle

If you need uncomplicated rules UFW is fine. If you need complicated then iptables may be better (e.g. turning a host in to a router in order to do more complicated things).

Do you want a free VPS? - Always free - from Oracle

"The Uncomplicated Firewall (ufw) is a frontend for iptables" https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UncomplicatedFirewall Add a rule in UFW and do an "iptables -L" - it's just a wrapper. That being said I use RH based distro's mostly - so firewalld is a far better fit for me.
