Durban - Persistent complaints about the “poorly constructed” and “difficult” Grade 12 maths paper 1 have been referred to Umalusi’s Assessment Standards Committee of Council for further investigation.

The Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training (Umalusi) yesterday confirmed that it had referred a complaint about the Grade 12 maths paper 1 to its committee.

If the council finds the complaints valid, maths marks could be adjusted upwards.

The council carries out the process of standardisation and statistical moderation of exam results for all qualifications that Umalusi certifies.

Umalusi spokesperson Kgaugelo Sekokotla said the complaint was received from a member of the public and stemmed from a collective grievance that the Grade 12 maths paper 1, which includes algebra and calculus, was not standardised and was worded in a way that created “unnecessary confusion”.

The "wording" is a general problem for the South African authorities. This is what happens when idiots get involved into things they know little about. The Gr11 maths paper was also messed-up in a few places.
For the sake of South Africa's future: there should be a few key sections where Affirmative-Action should not be implemented.

So will ALL schools in SA's Math marks be adjusted upwards then?

Of course not! Q5 schools can go fly a kite (which they built themselves). The problem here is the paper wasn't leaked a week before the exam, so students had no idea what to expect.

Oh, and 52/150 (for free), well now...

In the voice of Drew Carey...

"Welcome to who's math is it anyway, where the answers are made up, and the points don't matter"

Then I wonder how these kids would do in University, specially those that want to study engineering, teaching, art, etc
What does that have to do with people that set up exams that don't know what they are doing?

Out of 150? There's your 33% right there. Or more accurately 34.666 recur

show us the paper.
Was it difficult or just badly written ( The paper it self).

I have heard some horrible stories about exam papers being so wrong.
Aww the times when the biggest scandal was a typo in a typing paper. That you had to type as a typo.

These dumbdumbs are joining the work force in a few weeks. Fantastic pool to pic from.
