Telkom brings down ADSL prices by a few measly rands then puts up rental here, interconnect fees there and who knows what else

This should come as no surprise... Telkom's company track record stinks to high heaven and will come back to bite them all in good time. Once people are offered a viable alternative and the monopoly ends... people are going to jump ship in droves and the company will sink. Rest assured... what goes around comes around! ;)

I long for the day when I see the company sold off to the lowest bidder with it's stock prices at rock bottom and the company is carved up into little useless pieces which will then be absorbed by bigger competing corporations and forgotten. :p

Bwaaahahahahaha ...
VANs’ 087 numbers includes the fee that Telkom charges for making a call to another network, and the termination fee which each service provider charges for access to their network. Telkom’s charges range from R0,82 to R1,07.
I don't call 087 numbers, but ya, lets play another game of monopolee!

The crazy thing is that Telkom are punishing their own clients for the emergence of VANS. It is not just greed, but stupidity as well. Far from diminishing the appeal of VANS, it add greatly to their appeal.

Just went to the Orion site and received these popups:
This website is developed for Internet Explorer Ver.6 and above and may not function effectively on Netscape Communicator.
This website is developed for Internet Explorer Ver.6 and above and may not function effectively on this version of IE. Please upgrade.

First of all, Firefox is not a version of IE...

Secondly, they want us to switch to a alternative fixed line provider but don't make the effort to support alternative web browsers.

Thirdly, it doesn't look good for an IT company to only support IE.

This comes as no surprise at all, what is amazing the minister/president talks about bringing prices down but nothing happens! Telkom just keeps doing what it's doing and nothing else changes!

“Telkom’s interconnect rates amount to swindling, and are particularly deplorable in a telecommunications environment that is supposedly undergoing deregulation,” says Du Toit.

Not sure what Du Toit means here by deregulation. He could be referring to the licensing of VANs but I would term this as liberalization. I can't see any deregulation whilst the goverment is both market player as well as regulator. A truely independent and properly funded ICASA could allow competition to flourish without government interference. When we see them actually take Telkom to task over the interconnect fees, only then will I believe that they are no longer a government controlled regulatory agency.

While Telkom are no angels when it comes to interconnect fees, their greed seems quite tame when compared to our dearest cellular providers e.g. R0.44 vs. R1.25.
