Eskom on Monday said it had replenished reserves after implementing stage two load shedding during evening peak periods over the weekend.

The utility said it needed to refill its water and diesel reserves after one of its major suppliers, PetroSA, encountered difficulties with a supply pipe.

Eskom said 70 percent of its reserves had been refilled and the chances of load shedding would remain low ‘for now’.

Spokesman Khulu Phasiwe said the utility was also getting more capacity at its Gourikwa Power Station.

“So far we don’t have major issues in terms of supply; the problem was on Saturday but it has now been fixed, which is why we are relatively good for getting the required diesel supply into Gourikwa Power Station.”

During the public hearings into Eskom’s application for a tariff hike last month, the utility expressed concern about the amount of money it was spending on diesel to operate open cycle gas turbines.

While its application was turned down, it started looking at other cost-cutting measures.

Phasiwe said the utility still had the required funds to buy fuel.

Eskom has been implementing rolling blackouts regularly this year, saying it is trying to catch up with maintenance work.
