Hi Guys

Just a quick question.

I have a Telkom duoPlus 300WR, Firmware Version 120.70.6.

Syncing at 10meg with the following router stats.

Code:
Modem Status
 Connection Status Connected
Us Rate (Kbps) 1015
Ds Rate (Kbps) 10012
US Margin 8
DS Margin 22
Trained Modulation ADSL_2plus
LOS Errors 0
DS Line Attenuation 25
US Line Attenuation 10

I notice US Margin is low @ 8dB.

Line keeps dropping/losing sync (especially when accessing this machine via Teamviewer etc) and it is uploading.

I know there are 2 options - either get a better modem, or drop my line sync speed profile down (to say 8meg) which would improve Noise margins.

What modem would you suggest replacing this with (I don't really need any fancy bells and whistles). And do you think it will significantly improve my noise margin to such a point where it doesn't keep dropping?

Thanks in advance

i just recently bought an ADSL N55U ... has nice options for "stability adjustment" to either make the line stable or get more performance if the line is already stable ... and something called SRA (seamless rate adaptation ... also to make speed etc more constant and prevent dropped connections)

Before spending money, first test your line at 8meg.

Your lines stats are pretty good. Not sure how to interpret the noise margin, but the attenuation is is perfectly healthy on both up and down, and should easily support 10mbps sync with no stability issues.

I would try a different modem, and different filters. You can borrow from a friend or colleague, before investing in new ones.

If you do plan to invest in a new modem (or want to test with a good modem), I would suggest Netgear. They are very stable and fault tolerant, especially on flaky lines. Not very customisable though, but hopefully that is not an issue.

I have just got off the phone from Telkom who put my line down to 8meg to test for stability.

US Noise Margin increased to 17dB (from 8). I understand anything above 10 is usually stable. Will monitor.

Thanks

As your sync rate is increased, your noise margin decreases, and vice versa. The simpler figure to look at is attenuation.

More info in this thread: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/186156-Understanding-SNR-and-Attenuation-Rates

Noise margin measures how much higher your signal is than the minimum required to sync at the current rate. That's why if you sync at 4Mbps, you will have a lower "SNR" than if you were to sync at 1Mbps.

Hi There,
I think you have pretty much had the response here.
To just add my little bit to it. I agree that before putting out money try and borrow a router to see if it does solve the issue. I also think that there may be an issue on your line so you need to pursue that more with Telkom and not just accept the 8MB as the solution.

Good luck Tim
