100Mbps broadband prices: Telkom LTE Advanced vs FTTH

How can they offer such small data packages with fibre? :wtf:

It's the out of bundle where they make huge profits but ridiculous rip off rates.

Fiber with cap makes no sense...itll just be eaten into or throttled to death.

I pay around R600 pm for my uncapped 35/35mbps fiber here, but my set top box uses the same fiber link to stream "cable tv".

35 is the lowest they have available. 75mb goes for around R180 more & 150mbps is around R1k pm uncapped.

Not trying to be all braggy about it, but it genuinely makes no sense considering the place im situated is on a friggen island way above the arctic circle with extremely mountaineous terrain...so not an easy place to roll out backbone. I guess we can thank the ANC for cockblocking LLU initiatives.

Agreed... It's too overpriced in the run.If iI remember correctly there won't be charge for 4 meg connection if you want more speed you'll have to cough up more cash...

The pricing is fine if they just included more data. I pay around R1500 for my Internet right now, so not really a price issue. Just need more data.

With all these fiber connections in the country it makes telkom happy because they dont have to worry or hear about local loop unbundling anymore its like forgotten thing.

I fail to see how you can compare the two ,wireless is finite and once you have 10 or more people downloading at 100 meg it will degrade badly and just get worse the more people on the tower .
FTTH should be a much better option .
A lot of people may be happy with LTE but the tipping point will come sooner or later .

Not trying to be all braggy about it,.

You just thought it would be a good idea to let us all know just how awesome broadband is in Europe ?

Or you just wanted to confirm that mountains do not prohibit progress ?

Once again, these articles mean nothing. The majority in SA do not even have any FTTH option at all

Telkom is just wasting their time and resources in these areas.
Why not target other areas where there is no existing infrastructure or what there is is not sufficient.

If they go on like this they will always play second fiddle and follow with uncompetitive products.

In the end FTTH will always be the winner. I had enough frustrations with wireless. For home and office a fixed line is the best option, period.

I would happily pay R1399 a month for LTE but that cap would have to be a hell of a lot more than 100GB a month.

The only way Telkom can compete in Parkview and Parkhurst is by using their existing 40/10Mbps or 50/15Mbps VDSL line for R599 per month, plus a 100GB capped account from Afrihost at R199 per month. At a total of R798 per month it still works out R100 cheaper than WebAfrica at R899 for the same speed and data.

See the VDSL2 50/15Mbps thread here:

But then you stuck with crappy Afrihost Data.

Are you sure about Afrihost's data?
