I live on a smallholding 10km from town. I knew my chances of getting an adsl line was remote, but I applied for a 192 line anyway.(3 Jan). On 24 Jan the guy phoned me to get access to my property. That night when I got home the line was working. I installed my modem and did the normal speed tests. I was getting 34 Kbytes! As it was the 24th already, I started downloading everything I could find.
On Jan 27 someone from Telkom phoned me and informed me that he investigated my application and that I was situated too far from an exchange to get adsl. He said that it would never work. I used small words to inform him it was already installed and working just fine.
He was very surprised and i think a little embarassed. I don't think these guys have a clue.
Bottom line is I have a (very expensive) adsl connection and it is working better than expected, for the moment at least
