I had that with apple music and something went wrong where my downloaded music disappeared and showed as other, I had to go to backup.

Its actual data. Messages, attachments, contacts, bookmarks, Genius data, album art and so on. As you use your phone, it tends to accumulate.
You can delete your browser cache and history, message threads and so on if you'd like and there is always an option to restore your phone. Your timing is good. IOS9 out today... Do a clean install, not the OTA one (download the .ipsw file directly, open iTunes, connect your phone, go to the General tab and press the Alt/Option key when you click on Restore to navigate to the downloaded file). You should be good... 'till that data builds up again.

How about adding a micro sd card to hold all your accumulated other? oh ya never mind, just delete all your data, you obviously don't need it on your phone anyway..

Is deleting all your "other" a viable solution? Seems the "other" is integral to the use of the phone. Perhaps limiting its use to that of a paperweight will ensure adequate free space.

You keep your browser cache, cookies and the like on your phone or machine? How do they perform when you clean your systems out? Better, or do they become paperweights?

get a bigger phone..

^this

Android (and others) have microSD support, you can just pop in a SD card which can take care of your storage woes, but not so with Apple products.

You'll need to look at upgrading your phone to a model with more storage space. Once that is done, and you've migrated all your data across, then you can wipe+reset your old phone and sell it off to defray some of the costs.

Reset is so easy if you have your stuff backed in iTunes.

Why do non apple people always try and look for a opportunity to leave useless comments?

You know that the "New" Galaxy 6 dont have an sd card either?

Anyway back to Apple discussion.

Your IOS normally takes about 1gig of your storage that makes sense.

It might be a app that you use to store photos or videos.
So if you go in Itunes and then to the APP tab at the left look at all your apps right at the bottom on the right hand side there is normally a couple of apps that you can import media or docs into and that will just diplay as other as Itunes dont know what the app is storing.

I have Infuse and Xtreme player for movies and shows that display as other in the Itunes

I was listening to a podcast where a developer(i think of AudioBooks app) was evaluating the users for an app only iPhone 6/plus devices. He found 43% of users had 16GB devices and of that 37% of these users have less than 1GB free, close to 55% have less than 2GB.. compared to 1% of 64GB owners. Basically Apple and other phone device manufacturers are pretty guilty of supplying a phone which will not meet the needs of pretty much everyone. Full blog post of the developer is here

I reckon the reason is pushing the price.. if they made an entry model of 32GB, people will not run out of space in a hurry.. i haven't and only do when doing video + pics and have not managed to upload to my iCloud. So if the e.g. Apple made the entry 32GB, i reckon the % people who would opt for it instead of 64GB would result in loss compared to having to deal with support issue costs. Note, the device cost, fitting 32GB instead of 16GB is not even in question.. just the $100 extra they make on larger devices.

prior to iOS9, my phone had a large section of "Other", but as soon as i did the update, it seemed to straighten itself out!
(I have the 64GB phone)

Is Android pro or against external storage? The new Nexus lacks an SD slot.
