I was so happy and excited once I saw a banner on Telkom Business Mobile 16 gb for R99 p/m,will consumers ever get such a deal like this on mobile ? Even though it is limited I feel tempted to sign-up, best deal in town for mobile data ever. -- I wish the REP on here could make a plan for us forum members.

R99 x 24 = R2376
16 gig x 24 = 384 gig

Subject to 24 month contracts. If you think the price of mobile broadband is going to stagnate over the next 2 years then think again! It's going to plummet.

So it's as much a gamble of the market as buying a 24 month futures contract for data prices on the JSE. I wouldn't touch this with a 10 foot barge-pole...

DJ.. Do you know something we don't know ? How sure are you that prices will definitely plummet in the next year ? With a decline in voice, data prices will most probably remain the same, and won't change much. Infrastructure cost, maintenance, salary increase etc.

Next year? 25% confident. Next 24 months (which is the duration of the contract), 95%...

RichardG thanks for bringing this deal to our attention.
It's a damn bargain if it indeed is "anytime mobile data".
That works out to R6.19 per GB (with the benefit of use on their speedy LTE network).
I'm willing to bet mobile data prices won't fall to R6.19 per GB in the next 24 months !
Question is how can a non-business customer sign up for this deal ???

I disagree that you should look at it like a futures contract. You can treat it like a balloon payment setup because the value of data diminishes over time.
Instead of paying once off R2376 for an asset that delivers certain functionality each month for a fixed number of months you are paying for the asset over the life of the asset in fixed instalments. If you apply the fact that there is no interest in the transaction it may well represent a good undertaking if it suits your business case but know you are paying tomorrow (in higher costs per megabyte than what can be acquired on the market) for what you are getting today.

The real catch in the deal is that it isn't 16 gigs of 3G/LTE data but rather a bundle of 16 gigs of WiFi and 3G/LTE. Moreover Telkom Mobile will make money by subscribers failing to renegotiate the terms.

I couldn't find the terms and conditions on 16gb limited availability deal - not sure if you have to take out a Samsung tablet to qualify for the 16gb deal.

Agree Brunette, in Europe they pay far high prices on mobile data...

Hopefully the Representative can come back to us *make an exception* - if he/she has the authority :p

Found this doing a google search:

http://mybroadband.co.za/news/broadband/92067-telkom-business-lte-special-16gb-for-r99.html

Very misleading banner
“Get down to business even faster with a Huawei E3276 LTE dongle for only R99 per month, with 6GB of data and an additional 10GB Wi-Fi data to use in Telkom Mobile hotspots,” Telkom Mobile said.

Telkom Business is offering its clients the following for R99 per month on a 24 month contract:

Huawei E3276 LTE dongle
3GB of Telkom Mobile anytime data
3GB of Telkom Mobile Night Surfer data (between 11pm and 5am)
10GB of free Wi-Fi available at Telkom Mobile hotspots
Free SIM and connection worth R200

Last time I got excited, then saw that it was 10GB WiFi + midnight bundle + normal hours = 1xGB@Ryz p/m.

Haven't been arsed to check this out but suspect the same.

It's an opportunity cost loss, effectively, and a gamble on the data price market to an extent. I'd run this business decision by treasury before IT...:D

RichardG - Thanks for clarifying the deal !

Not the bargain we thought/hoped it was. It really was too good to be true.

I can't see in their deal where the data adds up to 16gigs. They're smart internet 1gb packages, mostly, so 1gig of data, 3gigs night-surfer data, and then a magical 12 gigs that is not mentioned anywhere, nor how it is carefully restricted in some way.

In fact the link to the deal simply takes a person to their mobile data page. I can't actually see that deal anywhere. Looks kinda like a bait and switch...

I would run it by HR before treasure or IT ... ;)

The deal is specifically tailored for business clients to offer mobile internet to roaming staff without a corporate APN etc ... Paying the cost over time to deliver the ability to get the job done is the only number I'd look at - basically will this save more money than other options over the 2 year period

Can anyone actually find the page for that deal? It's a static advert on all pages, not just the Samsung deals page, so I'm not convinced that it's got anything to do with those Samsung deals. Nor any deals I can find there either...

Discussed here:
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/576451-Telkom-Business-unveils-LTE-special-16GB-for-R99

And this about sums up the situation :D
It is a good deal but not a game changer and as JvZ would say not one targeted at the users of this forum - well not directly but some in purchasing decisions.

The dongle is what makes the deal good. What Telkom is essentially doing is providing business customers with an LTE based solution for rollover and mobile usage. So if you are a small business with ADSL your management and sales team can have these bolted onto the business Telkom account at less the R100 a shot and be able to connect if there is an ADSL problem or if they are on the road. The 10 gigs wireless stuff is really only of value as Telkom expands their wireless footprint - and they really have to do some work on that.

In fact any member of staff who has work to take home with them or who as part of their contract may be expected to check in with the office email is a candidate for this.

Even try the Telkom Wireless hotspots, it is the speed of dial up - how the hell are you going to be doing 10GB a month at such speeds then?

24 months to pay off an LTE device :)
but yes that really is the sum of it - the plan has a massive OOB risk, but this is managable especially because TM has a disabling of access on OOB - a redirect system

The product has usage cases but they don't turn on the data being cheap - and in 24 months time it will be ****off expensive

Poor OOb victims thinking they have 16 gigs are in for a surprise when their managers calls them in for a chat about why their next pay-slip is minus R3000, or R6000 if they didn't realise that half of the allocation is for night surfer time only...

There is no such thing as OOB Shark with Telkom Mobile if you have enabled the setting, peace of mind. I feel sorry for those who don't enable it.

Still I would like more clarity on this deal, very misleading the banner. I know * stands for terms and conditions etc.
