I have been doing tests and have come to the conclusion that a faster line does not really help with WoW. 512,1024,4mb on a shapped account all get the same latency to server. Although smaller "pipes" 384,512 are affected when using VENT or TEAMSPEAK with WoW on a shapped account. The only performance increase I have managed to get is by using an unshapped account (over a 4mb line latency on STORMRAGE ranges from 219ms - 600ms)

Conclusion : unshapped accounts will help your latency in WoW not pipe size. So either an unshapped account or move closer to the server (move to US) Option 3 I have left out, as I doubt it will happen in my lifetime, that is wait for TELKOM to open up the international link to full capacity instead of squeezing the "hose pipe"

WoW doesn't need a huge pipe - I have an addon that shows you how much KB/s the game is using, and it's never gone over 4-5KB/s (large battlefield/busy town - normal play is 1-2). The only way you will notice a difference is when SAIX/Telkom stops shaping the lines - they are artificially introducing high lag.

what is the best lat you should be able to get, lets say BT or another large provider was in the country giving us the same service here... Obviously it wont be like 30ms cause we are so far away right?

Why would a higher line speed have made playing better? All speeds (384 as lowest) can handle the data needed, why would you waste your time testing it?

Its obviously only about latencies, and those are the same for all line speeds.

lol, and why BT, they prety much suck for international. But way better than Telkom. Yes, we wouldnt be able to get 30ms, around 250 would be best. More like 300-350 could be likley on unshaped.

If Telkom's shaping wasn't involved, I'd guess we'd get around 150-250ms, instead of the 600-800ms we get right now. That would make a huge difference in the playing experience.

Ja, about 550-750ms is what i get normally. Its fine, but you do yield a slight advantage during pvp, well, thats what i usually blame it on when i get pwned.
:)
Increased speed should have no effect at all on wow, as mentioned above.

I would be interested in this. What is it called? I actually play AOE3 though.

One more thing about this whole discussion: Are you guys saying that for me to have a good ping I should get a 1Gig unshaped account for gaming. I have 384 line.

But then if the shaped one I am currently using is illegal..........oh I just dont understand..........

Revve - where did you get that add-on and what is it called? I would also like to monitor the amount of KBs the game transfers.

Man I wish my lat was around 550 ms.. my normal is about 850ms and 1000ms when my flatmate gets home :( How I miss my days of 42ms when I was living in London.

As much as I hate Telkom, I must admit I was supprised and pleased that they installed my line within 2 and a half weeks.

You will never get below 250ms on WoW simply because 250ms is the line latency for SAT-3, then you have the local infrastructure to contend with and router delays etc. So if you're getting 350-400ms count yourself very lucky indeed. This is all simply because of how far we are from the actual servers.

So never use an IS adsl account for wow as they push all adsl traffic through satellite and that thing orbits at about 39000km so your latency will jump up another 250-300ms at least.
