Need some input here please if possible.

My brother is looking for a new business laptop with the following requirements. Think the budget is around R8k

15" screen
i5 (at least 3rd gen)
4GB RAM with room for expansion
1 HDD with an empty second bay for expansion
Slim design if possible

My main problem is the resolution. Im looking all over the show but all of them are 1366x768 which is useless. he needs the work area, so it really needs to be 1920x1080

Input and advice appreciated

You might have to increase that budget a bit. If you have a re-seller account with any of the big importers you might be able to grab a HP Envy for just over R9k.

1366x768 is a terrible resolution and I still cannot fathom why this became THE default size and can only think of it as a manufacturer cost-cutting inclusion.

To find a notebook with a full HD 15" screen AND 2nd HDD bay AND slim design you are going to have to pay quite a bit.
You will find a mSATA+SATA option with full HD 15" screen notebook and 8Gb/16GB RAM costing a lot more than the 8K budget.

Unfortunately 8K does not get a whole lot of laptop anymore. You will need to look at 12K and up notebooks alas.

A quick Google uncovered this;

http://www.wootware.co.za/msi-gp60-...-8-single-language-64-bit-15-6-notebooks.html

But nothing in the 8K price range with all those specs required.

Ive been told to stay away from HP as there are no local service agents...

Is that correct?

Will double check with my mate as he just bought two Envy's. Regarding local support Dell comes out tops and I've had good dealings with Samsung as well. The laptops are a little pricier though

IIRC HP in South Africa has no consumer warranty front and all these have to go through the nightmare called Let Me Repair It LMRI. The HP business / commercial stuff support is top-notch tho' and does indeed have HP local points of contact and onsite backup.

The Envy stuff should be business methinks ... will need someone who knows to confirm.

EDIT:

[-]Hmmmm ... the envy looks like it is a carry-in with LMRI warranty. Eish.[/-]

Confused I be...

To help you identify the category within which your product falls, listed below are the consumer product categories:

HP DeskJet Printers (excluding the 1000, 2000 and 9000 series)
HP OfficeJet Printers (excluding the 9100 Series and Laser models)
HP LaserJet 1018, 1020, 1022, P1000, P1505, M1120 printers
HP Colour Laserjet CP1215, CP1515, CP1518 printers
HP PhotoSmart printers
HP InkJet All-in-One products
HP Print-Scan-Copy (PSC) products
HP digital cameras
HP Pavilion and Presario Notebook PCs
HP G5xxx or HP G7xxx Notebook PCs
HP Pavilion Desktop PC’s
HP Pavilion flat panel monitors

If your product falls within the above range, click here for the process of submitting a defective consumer product for repair.

If your product does not fall within the above product range, it is a commercial product.

Perhaps wait until someone who KNOWS can comment.

Dell on the other hand has absolutely brilliant support in SA.

Text will be way too small with full HD on a 15" monitor. He will go blind. Even on my 17" it's debatable.

Rather look at 1600*900 for a 15".

MSI have a few nice ones.

Thought HP dropped LMR?

Yooops... seems like it... it is now Ensure IT Services (Pty) Ltd .

Owners of products in HP’s consumer range need to contact Ensure IT Services (Pty) Ltd for submitting a defective product for repair:

Ensure provides service and support for HP Consumer PCs, Notebooks and HP Consumer Printer products, including the HP Pavilion, Presario and Office Jet product ranges.

15" with 1920x1080. It does make writing very small though.

Just takes a little setting up to get right, try Ctrl ++ for your browser - i run that at 125%
& in control panel/ display

I agree with this. HD+ is a great resolution for 15".
