Good day. I have a 1998 corsa b 1.3. Engine has been in good condition and at 150000km. The car has just went in for a major service and tappets\Hydrolic Lifters have been replaced. My biggest problem is that I am getting the worst fuel economy ever. 25lt to 150km or worst on average. The fuel is burning very rich.

As far as I am aware, the car does not have a Lambda Sensor(according to the mechanic). I removed the battery from the car but it did not make a difference. The Major Service replaced everything and it seems that it never help. Want to take it to GM but they charge R650 an hour and no guarantee. Any ideas what i can check up to see what could be causing this?

Isn't it carburetor fed? The mixing of air & fuel happens there so that might be the culprit, they would (should) have picked up any leaks when it was in for the service.

There is a motor workshop in Retreat called MACE who could diagnose the problem for you. Don't know where you live though? One of my cars is a 1998 Astra 1.4 and I get 7.8l/100km for only in town driving, with 3 guys inside all the time

Before I start trying to explain how to work out fuel consumption - perhaps I'd better start off by saying that the 98 Corsa used a hell of a lot of fuel even when it was brand new. Our demo ones at Williams Hunt in Bellville battled to get under 10l/100 - I drove over 50 k's a day to work on the freeway and still couldn't get much better than 8.5 l/100.

Fuinally there ios no way in hell that you are going to get any idea of fuel consumption, doing a thumbsuck and saying that it uses about 25litres every 150 km's.

Fill the car up - zero the odo (if it doesn't have one, write the mileage down) then drive for a couple of hundred km - even 150 if that's your favourite number, then go back to the petrol station, and fill it up again.

Only at this stage can you divide the number of litres used by the mileage you have done and end up with Litres/100 or just divide litres into km and you get km/l.

DO NOT rush off to have the car tuned until you have done this and at least know that your car is running incorrectly.

Thanks for all the replies. I will have to measure it properly to get an exact amount of fuel that it is consuming.

When I got the car 2 years ago, it was working perfectly. According to the previous owner, the engine blew once(over heated), and the cam belt snapped once. Both times the engine was built up again back to fully working condition.

How I know that something is wrong, is that every time I stop at a robot, I can only smell fuel. I had someone look at it (former mechanic), and they said the fuel is burning rich. If you put your hand in front of it, after 10 seconds, you hand is black. According to the previous owner, the ECU is totaled(makes no sense because the car wouldn't start) and the engine fan has a bypass switch for when the car heats up(probably need a new thermostat).

Now this problem started after I put a Cone filter in the car. Removed it after a few days, but that started the problem. I have a feeling it could be the airflow sensor on the airbox. Maybe it need replacing or cleaning. Don't really know how it works though. If anyone has experience with this kinda problem or knows any suggestions, it will be highly appreciated.
