Hi there guys

Could you please help me with something.

My have a 1GB cap on my account at my ISP. Does that mean I can download
1024MB or 1000MB?

They say 1GB = 1000MB. I think they are wrong.

What do you think.

Feedback will be appreciated.

Regards

Depends on provider.. saix seems to be >1kMB

BUT that was pre nov 1 2005, since then isp's are in charge of capping you, so it is out of provider hands and depends on the isp's interpret it :/

check wikipedia, depending on the context it can mean either.
personally i think it should be 1024 because ultimately you have to store data on something and the closest binary number to 1000 is 1024

I also say it should be 1024MB because if you buy 1024MB Ram for your PC you say you have 1GB Ram.

If you buy a 1GB Memory stick it is sometimes advertised as a 1024MB Memory stick.

If you go to Google and you type the following in the search box:

1GB = ?MB

It gives you the answer: 1024MB.

MTN also says 1GB = 1024MB

they wont cut you off on exactly 1000mb or 1024mb. you will propably go over 1024 also before being cut off

At WA had a debate about this awhile back :). We decided to stick with 1024 since it favours the customer. If you wanted to be pedantic we would write 1GiB.

Generally speaking though if you speaking about bandwidth and transmission of information its actually 1000. Thus a 10Mbps network refers to 10 000 000 bits per second not 10 048 576 bits per second.

Hard disk manufacturers uses the 1000 standard, that why when you format a 250GB drive windows will show you 233GB's.

Almost every ISP (including Telkom / SAIX) consideres 1GB to 1024Mbytes.

Thats networks transmission capacity...

when talking about data :

8bits = 1 byte
1024 bytes = 1 kilobyte
1024kilobytes = 1megabyte
1024megabytes = 1gigabyte
1024gigabytes = 1 terrabyte

Westerndigital lost a case just for doing that and offered everyone that had bought a WD hard drive since 2001 free back up software worth $30, i have mine :)

Interesting fact, Scooby.

AFAIK, marketing-types prefer to use 1,000,000 bytes = 1Mb, whilst technically 1,048,576 bytes = 1Mb (from the fact that in binary terms 1,024 bytes = 1Kb = 2^10)
:D

Wikipedia has a very good explanation, here. It seems that both methods are acceptable.

From SAIX FAQ

4. How much is 3 Gigabytes?

The proper defintion of a Gigabyte according to international standards is one thousand million bytes (3 000 000 000). A Megabyte is one million bytes (1 000 000) and a kilobyte (1 000). However, in computer terms, it has become common to refer to a kilobyte as 1024 bytes, a Megabyte as 1024x1024 (1 048 576) bytes and a Gigabyte as 1024x1024*1024 (1 073 741 824) bytes. Telkom has chosen to use the latter definition for a GigaByte. Your 3 Gigabyte cap is therefore 3 221 225 472 bytes. (Thats over 200Megabytes more than 'proper' 3 Gigabytes). In fact, there is a proper name for the Gigabyte as we have defined it, and its called a 'Gibibyte' (also Mebibyte and kibibyte). However since virtually nobody uses this term, or have even heard of it, we stick to 'Gigabytes'.

So if an ISP is selling u SAIX accounts and not giving u those numbers, well...

All of a sudden my ISP said the following:

You get a 1Gb Cap ie: our systems cut you off once you have reached 1Gb ie: 1073741824 Octets ie: 1024Mb

Don't know what made them change their minds.:D ;)

heh, btw cybersmart use the GB definition saix uses ie.. 3,145,728KB = 3GB.
I know cause i once took my account to 3,141,173kB .. ie 0.004GB (4MB) left and didn't get capped :) man that month the last few days i was playing my mud alot cause it was double xperience too and hoped it would be enough so i don;t miss out happy times.

No, they owe you 75MB. :D

3GB = 3072MB
3072 - 2997 = 75MB :D ;)

If I were you I'll ask them for it.
