2 million WhatsApp packets per second on Vodacom’s network

And pretty much the major reason for WhatsApp existing in the first place is the pricing model for SMS's and MMS's

To think that WhatsApp may have never existed had the Telcos not been so greedy around SMS's.

"2 million encrypted WhatsApp packets per second on Vodacom’s network" FTFY

We pay Vodacom for internet data.
What we use it for is up to us.
The more data we use the more we pay.
So what's the issue?

I think the drop off at 8pm is when people get home and switch to wifi.

Surely they should be happy that people using their network for data-I mean as fibre rolls out and is everywhere like in a first world country- why use Vodacom when you can use home/work wifi or is watsapp on vodacom mostly used by people on the move?

It's actually not that impressive. I have a R3000 router at work that can push 2mil packets per second.

I am sure Vodacom can afford to stay afloat charging more for OOB data than the data cost to a mars rover

Yip. Remember those days when SMS was the only [expensive] way to communicate without phoning.

I actually don't hey? It was like it was part of they way you communicated and you accepted the cost.

I remember resisting going on WhatsApp like the plague, or any IM platform for that matter.

Shame Vodacon... are you going to start throttling those packets. Also, what are you trying to do with profiling traffic? Did you friends in the ANC ask you to snoop?

How many packets was it at the hight of mixit, @jannie?
Wow :) , I'll dig around in my archives and see if I can find an old report.

But you raise an important point, don't ever think that your dominance ensures your future viability. From MixIt to BBM to WA, the only sure things is that you'll get disrupted.

/And yes, this applies to dominant MNOs as well ;)

Not sure if you're referring to chat applications or your own self...
As for your comment about "dominant MNO's" are you trying to be humorous or do you think we're stupid?

You really don't need to scrape the bottom of the barrel like this.....

Vodacom itself is - at any given time - poised to be disrupted. Just like EVERY OTHER business out there.

Found user numbers but not traffic. Peaked at 3000 to 4000 active users, 5 years ago, so I'd guess about 30% to 40% of the WA traffic. Or less if it was just IM. But I'm guessing.
