No idea, I don't get the impression that it's the first in production or anything special, just 'original shipped' release and without box at that.

Hopefully, the collector who bought this also asked John to write some piece of paper that these where his, and sold it to him, or something like that to retain the value.

Well he did offer to sign it, so that could probably be seen as proof but yeah a nice written document with his signature would go a long way to prove the authenticity.
