The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) in North West have arrested twenty (20) illegal mining suspects following an early morning raid at a mine shaft in Stilfontein on Monday.

According to Colonel Katlego Mogale, fifteen (15) AK47s, six (6) hunting rifles, two (2) shotguns and one (1) R5, boxes full of ammunition, explosives and an undisclosed amount of money were seized during the operation.

That's a lot of AK47s, and taking into account that it's not all the guns they have shows the extent of the problem, I just hope communities don't lose track and continue to put pressure on government.

Why do miners need guns? I would have thought it was rock drilling equipment. How to they extract the gold or whatever mineral it is from the rock?

In the evenings, after a long day of toiling in the mines in uncomfortable conditions, the Zam Zams like to dress up and pretend they are American Wappers and shoot each other up....

Well its illegal mining, so firstly they would have issues with the law and secondly they contest the mine with rival syndicates.

Most of all, they trade in raw gold so would be targeted by other criminals.

"Why do I always get rusted old East German MpiKM? That thing only has 50,000 rounds life left! How do I get one of the new batch?"
"C'mon guys...stop joking around! Who gave me an AK74 instead of a '47? You know we don't have any 5.45 ammo!"

Nice variety there. I wonder if these are old cache weapons or if they are brought in from Lesotho and are maybe defense force guns there?

More officers of this caliber and less of the useless tonsil Cele. He is on his way to the location where the Zama Zama's were arrested, probably to get the recognition for the arrests because he is useless.

They actually use the guns throughout the day. It's not the kind of environment the average person would want to work. Gangs and such control activities of the mines.

Often, when cornered, they don't fight back. They pick their battles wisely, especially when the tactically superior security forces are involved.
