Even though we're 4th on that list... Does anyone notice that the 3 places above us are pretty much official war zones?

We aren't 4th. That's quite obvious by now. Sudan is 2 "behind" us and the first caption in that article calls that region of Sudan "one of the most dangerous places to visit". No way that's a ordered list.

Yes but for different reasons. There are certain places in Israel that are completely safe. They are probably on that list due to being surrounded by a bunch of terrorists. Can anyone here tell me one city in SA that is safe

POFADDER...rofl

Ooooh, I love this game! This is where we take our opinions and state it as fact?

you're safer on the streets of israel at 1am, than you are in your own house in south africa at any point of the day

Mmm, certain places completely safe Marine1? Did you not read the article maybe?

There is a high risk of terrorism throughout Israel.

Now next is the part of the game where certain people start with personal insults cause they can't give a source for their "facts"?

I finally gave in and decided to look at this list. Two things I noticed:
(1) The title is "20 of the world’s most dangerous places". This doesn't imply that it's a list of all of the world's most dangerous places, just 20 of them.
(2) The countries listed don't appear to be in any specific order, so there is no implication that S.A. is more dangerous than any of the other countries listed.

If one accepts this then quoting all the bloggers in the world doesn't change the fact that what Francisca Kellett describes in the section, "South Africa", is valid and should be brought to the attention of prospective visitors, just like the warnings about any other countries on the list.

No.

This article is misleading. It took us 4 thread pages to come to the conclusion that this is not a top 20 list and that it is not in any order. If it took us that long to come to that conclusion, you surely can't expect the average reader not to be fooled in thinking that SA is the 4th most dangerous place on earth. Hell, I seriously doubt it should even be on a top 20 list of most dangerous countries.

The article is ambiguous and causes confusion to the point where it's a lie.

As I said in my post, it was the first time I looked at the list and I did not come to that conclusion. The article itself is less to blame than interpretation of it, and the 4 pages are an indication of it.

My point is that the style and structure of the article makes it extremely easy to misinterpret.

The author did a lousy job of writing the article and the blogger referenced earlier in this thread had all the right to blast her about it.

I get your point. We'll just have to agree to disagree on it though :).

The author did a lousy job of writing the article and the blogger referenced earlier in this thread had all the right to blast her about it.

I definitely agree with freedom of expression etc. It's just a little ironic to see a blogger calling someone a hack. The editorialising in the opening paragraph amounts to sniping:

And there, right behind Afghanistan, Iraq and Chechnya and just missing out on a medal is our dear own South Africa, although, as Kellett admits, seemingly almost with an air of disappointment:

…most visits to the country are trouble-free.

which doesn’t sound ever so dangerous, now does it?

Hence my argument about interpretation.

Wtf? The list doesn't even include Somalia! That should tell you how good their research was when they made this list.

Let me put it this way......I would sooner,on foot, drag a dead pig through the streets of Mogadishu than drive through Jhb. at night.

Beat? Is there really any indication that this isnt some arbitrary list rather than a ranking?

Yes bwana :) .. the list could be arbitrary .. however it could be ranked in the British authors mind. Being British and all he probably placed SA 3rd on purpose and never used a numerical system.

Nevertheless if it was a ranking I'd place us at number 1 based on respective categories. I think there are a few fundamental categories of crime that obliterate all others .. all less than desirable. Group them and its a recipe for disaster wrt dangerous places.

Note: I'm also not going to be moving to Britain ever. When it comes to a simple thing like 'dental' it would definitely be at the number 1 spot for 'most dangerous places' :p
