Traffic light disaster in Joburg

A major challenge the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) faces regarding keeping its traffic lights running at the city's intersections is a lack of law enforcement to combat cable thieves and opportunists tampering with lights to control traffic.

Speaking to 702, JRA operations manager Sipho Nhlapo said the issue of traffic lights constantly being off in Johannesburg relates to law enforcement, rather than service delivery.

If they get caught...

Why dont they just replace it with aluminum cable?

Does anyone know the thickness of the cable they use? Surely if its over 1mm2 that is over specced for robots?

I dont know what 1mm2 is but the ones I have seen lying on the ground with the cable chopped off the cable seems to about 2cm in diameter.

And yet somehow Cape Town gets it right...
Cape town crime is a bit more hardcore than joburg crime. They dont care about traffic light cables, thats just petty theft. Cape town is more into murder.

Make it illegal to beg and hawk at traffic lights, and a lot of these problems go away. Won't help for copper cable theft, maybe a little, but it'd make a real difference for traffic, crime and general motorist experience on our roads. Also at petrol stations.
make minibus Taxis and petrol station attendants, as well as car guards illegal while you at it,
simply wont happen,

Again it comes down to enforcement that is needed. Have all the laws you want; means nothing if it’s not enforced.

It is illegal. People are so used to the law not being enforced, they think begging at traffic lights is legal.

Well as you said they tamper with the lights to be able to control traffic to get tips.

If the JMPD and or Traffic Police were doing what they are supposed to and being paid for then they would be manning these intersections during outages caused by no matter what.

It's your fault and the anc's fault for not doing their jobs by ensuring people are doing what they are being paid to do firstly and secondly by managing their attitudes by them thinking they are above traffic control.

It's all about ethics and attitude IMO from everyone.

There in germiston CBD they cut off robots and the street lights. We need to start cutting off body parts for crimes committed.
