200:1 contention ratio?

Hi guys

I am not certain whether these guys have any inside information regarding the Telkom ADSL service, but they indicate a 200:1 contention ratio: “Telkom's ADSL is in the process of being multiplexed @ 200:1 this means you will be sharing your "512k bandwidth" with 200 other users.” (From http://www.streamnet.co.za/adsl.htm)

Does anybody have any an idea whether this is correct? Comments?

Well suddenly things make sense.
Chatting to the techies that work with us they reckon that there is talk of the cap being removed in March but replaced with something else and this is probably that something else.
<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">Telkom advise that customers more than 3,5km from the exchange may not be able to use the ADSL facility.<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">What happened to the 5 to 8 km - looks like Telkom deliberately wants to loose its ADSL customers.
I have also noticed recently that on many occasions my downloads (local) never exceed 30k.

200:1? That is insane!
Anyway, if it is not true, Telkom will have Streamnet's ass in the court in no time. [8]

Hi guys

I contacted Telkom (Hans & Steven) regarding the issue and I will publish the reply as soon as I receive one. The figure does sound high, but why would this company explicitly publish an arbitrary value? Interesting…

ROFL. [:D]

To think the SA Public put telkom where it is today. Now we must pay their lawyers to fight us. Its a total disgrace. Read these 2 more reports I found relating to Hellkom.

Telkom must be taken off its hook

Due to the way the network in SA ins constructed, several contention ratios are of importance.

I can think of the following:

Exchange to "SAIX"

"SAIX" to each of the other South African 1st tier ISP

"SAIX" to International.

This would really make interesting reading matter.

South Africa needs World Class Broadband at World Competitive Prices.

Telkom is definitely up to something...the modem bundle being one example.
Methinks they are going to try and lure ppl away from Sentech using a campaign with *lots* of fine print - eg. "ADSL 512kbps, Free Modem, No Cap!!"
(terms and conditions (ie. 200:1 contention ratio, limited support, no speed guarantee) apply)

Unfortunately less informed ppl may go for it, and then they will be screwed...of course not that Hellkom would care [:(!]

** How can Telkom claim to "Touch Tomorrow" when it can barely touch yesterday?
Because they're a BIG, GREEDY, MONOPOLY intent on keeping South Africa in the stone age. **

Any feedback yet?

Or will the release of such figures be a Public Relations disaster?

Hi Kaspaas

Unfortunately I did not receive any feedback yet. We can usually assume in these situations that my email has been binned and that Telkom is not willing to respond. I have sent this email to multiple addresses to ensure it reaches the intended person/people, so there is no excuse regarding feedback. It is in times like these that I remember clearly why I started MyADSL, and why such a site should exist.

Can anybody suggest another ISP to sign up with. I have just dumped MWEB for putting the subscription up to R329.00 per month and as far as I could see, all they were doing was providing a computer to confirm your password when you dialup. Yes they tell you that they have lots of other useful things like Encyclopedia Brittanica etc but really, all those things can be found for free on the internet. So R11.00 a day to confirm your password is steep.
Actually Telkom appear to be charging us twice for the same service. For starters, other than the password, you don't have to go anywhere near your Service Provider. All your uploads and downloads are going through Telkom's SAIX. Now Telkom then charge all those ISP's,( not sure of the exact figure but guessing at about R200.00), for the right to confirm your password. Therefore Telkom are actually getting nearly R900.00 per month out of each of us.
Also when MWEB asked why I was dumping them, I replied that I had not seen one single word from them putting pressure on Telkom to sort out the Capping. It would appear they were quite happy to charge another R300.00 per month for a second account. I also said that the majority of users appear to run out on about the 20th of the month, so how could they up there rates for a service that only ran for 2/3rd's of the month.
So back to my original question. Who is the cheapest password confirmer out there.

Hehe George,

Im also with MWeb. Personally I have yet to phone them with a complaint. Also for over a year now I have not received one virus or one spam mail in my mail box, to MWebs credit. However, I know little about their pricing structure. One can only look at the rediculous situation for them. They must buy from Telkom and then resell it to us for a profit.
My reasons for staying with MWeb at the time of getting ADSL are the above plus I would prefer to be on their backbone with their support than on Telkom's. Also I thought that one day when ADSL is thrown to market forces, I at least have my own modem and can be where I know I have had good service. I tend to be a loyal customer, but TELKOM ISNT LISTENING!

On the point of costs. Perhaps MWeb are throwing a bit too much money on advertising. Maybe their support base is been chewed into. I dont know. I would look at service before price, but that's just me.

Well I cant speak for MWeb, but surely they must of taken Telkom up on this point. If they havnt then Im surprised.

Re the contention ratio.

I just remembered something about this topic.
Im very good with remembering figures.
When the techie guy from Telkom installed my ADSL last year August he told me that I was cusomer number 5 on the system and their was <b>256</b> slots to fill. That was on the DSlam at the exchange.
