K, so going to have a look at one of these on saturday.
Now when I bought my 350z I knew all the things to look for cause I was familiar with the cars, but I have no idea what the usual faults/warning signs are to look at on the S3's?

Any ideas S3 owners?

I honestly would not touch this, its out of any maintenance/warranties etc Its a performance car, so its been driven like one...
You would be very lucky to get one thats not gonna be a burden

If memory serves the old S3 engine is a heavily tuned 2.0l, 188kw variant of the same engine found in the Golf 5 GTi.

I'd suggest paying attention to the signs usually associated with a turbo-charged car that has/has not been looked after.

*I had a guide to buying a used turbo car somewhere...damn can't find at the moment.

Its the same engine in a PGTi and the MK4 and TT and A3 - 1.8T 20v.
165kw, after 2002 they all twin turbos with bigger intercoolers and two tone leather and I think xenons.

Im not sure whats the common problems, its not a common car on the roads.

I had an S3, miss it a lot. Had a lot of fun driving it. You need to know if there has been any mods like chips etc or if it is stock standard. If it has been, find out which one it is, Freiling is a great but it is up to personal preference. You didnt have to do much modding on the S3 it was great standard.

You need to judge the owner, some Audi drivers can be a little pedantic, I didnt allow anyone to even eat or drink inside my car. You want to buy your car from someone who obviously takes care and not a boy racer.

if you need more info, have a look at Audiclub SA forum

If you do get it, enjoy the drive.

Was under the impression there was one in between that one and the new spec?

The 1st S3 had 157kw and then they released the 165kw version same model and shape as the 157kw. More recently we have the 188kw S3...

If the particular S3 has had any after market modifications done on it I would avoid it. I know remapping of the chip results in power hike to around 195kw but that really taxes the turbo in that vehicle resulting in premature turbo failure...

The 1.8 litre engine they use is bullet proof but the turbos are suspect...

The S3 is either an 8L or 8P model. The 8L was produced from 99-2003 in SA with very few registered only in 2004. All of them featured the same basic 1.8 VW/Audi group engine block used in various models such as the VW Mk4 Gti, Passat 1.8T, Sharon 1.8T and Beetle 1.8T as well as the A4 1.8T, and A3 1.8T, however the internals differed substancially to deal with the larger boost of the bigger turbo charger. They had twin intercoolers, but none of them were twin turbo charged from the factory (a myth linked to the naming of the Audi TT which had nothing to do with twin turbo)! Initially the engine produced 154kw. The motor was upgraded in 2001 to include variable valve timing along with a face lift, but the power remained unchanged. In late 2002 power was increased to 165kw matching the power of the identical motor fitted to the Mk1 Audi TT.

The most important things to look at on these vehicles are:

The Clutch (15-20k dealer replacement)
Brakes (5-8k dealer replacement)
Turbo (big money!)
Haldex coupling (or torque transfer/ 4x4 diff - 30k+ dealer replacement)
Gearbox (big money)

Stay clear of chipped and modified ones. They are sure to have been abused. While the vehicles are pretty bullet proof, no one wants to buy a vehicle that has been raped for the previous owner's thrills.

I would also avoid the pre face lift ones.

Because they are Audis, they have 12 yr anti corrosion warranties, provided the terms of the warranty have been complied with, but they rarely rust or give body work issues.

Get an Audi 80 point check done on one with a full Audi service history before buying is the best tip I can give you. If the owner couldnt afford the Audi service costs, you don't want to go near it.

In an S3, you get what you pay for. A cheap one is likely to have had previous damage, existing mechanical issues or a load of non-original parts fitted to it.

Thank you Calsim for posting facts instead of the rubbish posted above. I hate it when people with no knowledge of specific cars post crap about them.
Big money = bankruptcy, correct?
