500 000 SWC ticket requests

Zurich - The first 10 days of the third ticketing sales phase for the 2010 World Cup has seen the number of tickets applied for hit the 500 000 mark, FIFA revealed on Monday.

According to football's ruling body, 386 300 of those tickets were requested by South African residents (77% of the total applications), while 114 237 tickets applied for came from the rest of the world.

In comparison with the previous editions of the FIFA World Cups, the latest ticket applications figures are impressive," Horst Schmidt, chairperson of the FIFA ticketing sub-committee, said in a statement.

The United States heads the list of foreign countries for this phase with 22 942 tickets, followed by the United Kingdom (20 232), Mexico (7981), Germany (7697) , Australia (6277) and Brazil (4760).

The current sales phase, where around 1 million tickets are available, runs until January 22, 2010.

Thanks for stats...now I can make a more calculated application ;) I am going to assume that the SA apps are predominantly for cat 4 tickets for the SA and African games. Also that cat 3/2 for any USA or UK games are going to be heavily oversubscribed. In addition I am going to assume same for Brazil games (given general popularity).

That means for any SA / African games I should apply for Cat 2 or at least Cat 3 tickets - that means I will have 2/3 shots per draw. I will not waste chances on USA/UK/Brazil games, cause I will have to apply for Cat 1 to stand a decent chance - too expensive. And rather apply for Cat 1/2 for opening and final! And spend the change on some 'obscure' matches ;)

How difficult is it to travel from Centurion to Soccer City just before the opening? I guess traffic would be a nightmare. Will there be any public transport excluding traditional taxis?
