I just woke up today and found that my Macbook keyboard and trackpad were not working. After booting I can move the use the trackpad and keyboard to put in my password but once I am logged in they both cease to function. Instead, I get a dilogue box asking me to set up a bluetooth keyboard. Using my USB mouse I managed to go to the Trackpad and mouse preferences but I see nothing amiss though under trackpad its saying no trackpad is found. When I last used the computer last night it was working fine. Tried pairing with a Bluetooth keyboard I use for my iPad but it ndoesnt appear to be working. I certainly hope this is not a hardware failure...

Safe boot the Mac. Hold down the shift key when pressing the power button.

You could also attempt to reset the NVRAM.

Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R.
Turn on your Mac.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys immediately after you hear the startup sound.
Hold these keys until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for a second time.
Release the keys.

Tried the safe boot, resetting the SMC and PRAM but no changes. Let me continue checking online for a solution

Plug in an external keyboard and mouse, any keyboard will do. Then create a new user account and see if that works.
