Looking at buying the 2014 Mazda CX-5 2.0L Active Auto FWD as I really like it.

Anyone own one? What are the real world fuel consumption figures?

I see there is the facelift coming out here in June 2015 which has also made me think twice about buying now but I can't wait 6 months.

Complaints on Hello Peter about Mazda don't seem too bad.

Now Ford and Mazda have split here I hope there is not going to be problems with parts and service.
I see in Canada it comes with a 5-YEAR POWERTRAIN UNLIMITED MILEAGE WARRANTY! http://www.mazdaunlimited.ca/

Top SUV & very underrated in SA! Glad Mazda SA brought that good diesel here.

It's a Mazda. They rule the nest now. Toyota has gone to the Dogs.

Good question ... no answers.

Yes ... I too am looking at purchasing a CX-5. Want to get one before price increase in Jan. And if you wait 6 months, who knows what increases would have incurred as a result of our free falling Rand. Question for me is ... do I go for 2.0 Auto or not. Fuel figure is never as good on an auto, but I do drive a Kia Picanto automatic which is really a great drive. My other car is a manual estate. What to do?

There is a couple of sites that list real world figures, but it is still not easy to get a real good idea, as the fuel figure is based very much on what speed it was recorded at and how many kilos the car has done. Consumption goes up remarkably quickly above 80Km/h as wind resistance on a ‘big’ car takes effect.

Have a look here for some idea what to expect.

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymodel/2014_Mazda_CX-5.shtml

Also look at

www.automobile-catalog.com

And then search for your car. Lots of good data here.

Another issue I have learned about, when looking at Ford Kuga, is that there can be a significant variance between cars regards fuel consumption. A Ford salesman commented to me how he got different results from 4 different Kugas!!! Not what I wanted to hear. Makes buying a car based on fuel economy a gamble.

That said though, no matter how good or bad the figure might be, the CX-5 appears to be one of the better choices for fuel consumption.
Had a look at one in showroom yesterday. Very Nice!!!

Regards the Toyota comment ... for the life of me, I do not understand what is so great about Toyota. In 30+ years of driving, Toyota has always been overpriced and not great looking. Yet it seems the car of choice in SA with VW.

All the new Mazdas look awesome. They just need a proper hot hatch now. When is the Mazda 3 MPS arriving?

Thanks Brian for the info.

Yes I did notice on a shot freeway test drive that the wind noise increases above 80 km and at 120km is quite loud.

Check this video.

I would love to see you KIA Picanto automatic real life fuel consumption figures.

Kevin .. the video you posted is a good one. I had seen this couple of days earlier.

At 90km/h, the instantaneous consumption is around 6.2L/100Km which is decent enough for a biggish car.

My Kia Picanto can get (instantaneous figures) 4.5L at around 70-80Km/h and around 5.5L at 100Km/h (depending on wind direction and road gradient) if memory serves me correctly. ( I should do what the video shows sometime) I did a few trips from Southern suburbs to Gordon’s bay using both Baden Powel road and also N2 (100km round trips) and achieved around 5.8 Liters for the completed trip. (Kia 1.25L Auto - 2011 model) And I did travel at 120Km/h at times.

I have pretty much decided that I want the Automatic version of the CX-5. Now it’s just a matter of a salesman prepared to sell me a car at the right price. I sort of expect salesman to be on my tail, but no way. Also, to purchase a car, the very last person a salesman wants to see is a cash buyer. They are not really interested in cash buyers as there is no kickbacks to the dealership from the bank. Cash is clearly not king and this was openly admitted to me. Shocking!!

Brain.... what is the right price?

The best price I have been quoted is R 299, 000.00 for the 2014 CX-5 2.0 Active Auto brand new on the road with smash and grab.

I am having second thoughts.

1. Resale Value? Facelift CX-5 will be out here in 2015 and Mazda is not big in South Africa like it is in America and Mazda new sales are very slow worldwide. Mazda is still in the red on Wikipedia.

2. Fuel consumption is good for a small SUV and reading the Mazdas247.com forum owners figures makes me think I should buy a Toyota Corolla 1.8 CVT Exclusive instead.

3. Service plan is only three years and I want five years. They can only quote me on an extension is a few months time.

Thanks for any advice.

What’s the right price? Something better than list price.

The CX5 2.0 list price prior to Jan was …
R316600 for manual.
R326600 for Automatic.

Your price of R299000 is exceptionally good. Demo car maybe?

Best I could get is the manual price for Auto. No extras. I am cash buyer, so stand at a disadvantage.

Placed my order for the Soul Red colour before December end. New prices meant to have kicked in by in Jan. Something like 2.5% increase, or a further 8K increase in price.

2. Mazda sales have picked up remarkably and notably due to one particular car .. the CX-5. Resale value … I guess we could do a lot worse. Mazda is good brand.

Service plan .. was quoted something like R4700 for additional 2 years with all wear tear parts paid for. (brakes, oil kind of thing)

Second Thoughts: Hmm ... so did I. I test drove a 2.2 Diesel at first .. which is a rocket ship. Later I got to drive the the 2.0 petrol. Clearly not a rocket ship and certainly could do with more vooma. There has been a lot of complaints about lack of power, but its more to do with the gearbox charging through the gears to obtain best fuel figures. I can adapt to that though.

Yes price of R 299, 000 is good and this is for a brand new on the road Mazda CX-5 2.0L Active Auto FWD with 9km on the clock smash and grab and will be registered as a 2015 and I can collect once payment made, cash sale.

I test drove again on Friday the 2.0L Active Auto FWD and rest the consumption computer as we left and then did a big hill on the motorway and floored the pedal only to find it did fly up the hill as other cars do that I have driven and although it was going fast enough it I was having to keep my pedal to the floor which I have never had to do on that hill before and then to discover at the top the average fuel consumption is 18.8L/100Km! I was horrified! I then drove it down hill back to the dealer and it dropped by a few litres but still way more than I was expecting.

I love the CX-5 and can take delivery next week but the high fuel consumption and lack of power has put me off.

Do I take it or don't i take it?

I have driven the diesel and it is amazing with low fuel consumption 7L/100Km when pushing it, but the price is beyond my budget.

I have two cars a want and I am now trying to decide which one?

Is it worth paying the extra in fuel to have an CUV?

The CX-5 R 299,000 or the Toyota Corolla 1.8 CVT Exclusive R 280,000 and the corolla will be cheaper to run fuel wise has leather seats and Mirrorlink which I haven't managed to get working with my phone that has Mirrorlink 1.1 but assume an update to the radio software will fix it.

I can also get the Toyota RAV4 2.0 CVT brand new for R 299, 000.00 on the road but again fuel consumption is higher and everywhere else in the world it comes with the valvematic more fuel efficient engine but not here in SA. Not climate & cruise control which I want.

Sounds cheap.
Service plan covering brakes and oil? From what I understand only a "Maintenance Plan" cover brakes and oil etc. To upgrade a Toyota to maintenance plan will cost R 22, 000.00.

The CX-5 looks like a really nice vehicle but a normally aspirated 2.0L engine in a SUV body is going to be frustrating especially on the Highveld.
I'd take the turbo diesel if I was looking at purchasing one.

A steep hill is always going to tax the fuel consumption and drive up the average initially. Over a fair distance, it ought come down again. And if you did reset the computer before doing this run, then the average consumption is based on a very short trip with a step hill to work itself down from. Not really a fair way of determining fuel consumption. Even my Picanto would show this trend. Up a hill I could easily exceed 20L instantaneous consumption.

That said, various reviews have listed the CX5 as having the best fuel economy figures for its class .. and some even say better than hybrids in its class.

Yes but the turbo diesel is just too much more money. Another 50K. I simply don't drive enough km's to justify the price and the servicing overhead for diesel.

Guys, I'm involved in the automotive industry and live in Bloem.

We all know Ford and Mazda split. Also in our town Mazda is now with the Peugeot/Citroen/GWM dealer.

Mazda parts prices increased 4 fold since the split. Literally parts we got quotes for from the Ford dealer and had to be bought from the new Mazda dealer after the split saw the prices 4x the quoted price from Ford. The parts supply and service with the new dealer is also beyond useless.

Maybe make sure who and where your new Mazda is going to be serviced.

Well I am disappointed.

I ordered my car last year. Car had to come from King Sharka. After 2 weeks, car arrives, but wrong colour and wrong engine. No other cars available to sell me.

So television marketing of the CX5 pretty is useless if Mazda cant sell them. Duh!!!
