I would have liked to have seen him at centre or wing. Not saying it would have worked, but the bottom line is he just never liked the rough stuff - it was just never in his character.

On the plus side if you have a look at his twitter it's clear he has used the injury period to bulk up a little - he is looking huge.

Yep, Spies is all about the look rather than the work. I'd have a one legged 80 year old Duane Vermeulen before him at number 8 any day of the week.

A player I'm really missing is Pierre Spies!! At his best, what a fantastic athlete?! Who's our cover at 8? We don't have a specialist 8.

If I were granted one wish by the rugby Gods, it would be for Pierre to be the man and player he was prior to his illness!

/ and I know I'm going to get flamed for this revelation...

Him at his best was quite something, but that athlete disappeared a while ago.

He often gets gang tackled quite violently and then those around him have to move quickly to support him.

isn't that how you draw in defenders?

I remember the NZ team saying once that the player they feared the most from SA was Aplon.

a collective cheer goes up in their camp whenever we announce our team and see Aplon was overlooked.

and then we don't pick him.:wtf:

No flaming...
You be puttin' on ice till you come to your senses...

Spies was good until he had to stop because of "heart problems". After he miraculously recovered, his gave went for a bucket of brown smelly stuff.

And no, I did not say he used illegal performance enhancers and that his doctor told him to take a break because if he got caught he would be banned... Didn't say that at all.

Unless that can be backed up, I call bullshyte. Aplon was and is the worst little poephol we had in that position.

As a WP/Stormers supporter, in the last 10 years, Aplon has probably been my favourite player.

Yup. He is good enough, but he doesn't play for the right province. He won't get a shot. But then I don't think our problem is at wing. I'd rather want a backup plan for fullback.

No, Aplon doesnt get picked because he's not big enough. It's no secret that HM prefers brawn over anything else.

I rate both Aplon and Kolbe at 15, so Willie le Roux had better pull up his socks!

With an injury enforced gap at centre we need to bring Juan de Jongh and Frans Steyn back into the mix.

At flyhalf HM MUST decide on a principal player, either Pollard or Lambie - forget this rotational BS. Pick a general and trust in him.

I agree, we need to settle on an a team and a b team now.

Get your match 23 and work with them. Lots of these problems we're having at the moment is none of the players are getting time to settle and own the position. Le Roux is very highly rated overseas. He is a brilliant player, but the combinations keep changing and no one is getting used to the other players and they way they play. I have a funny feeling Jean will be back for the World Cup (unfortunately).

They need to settle on 23 players and play them together for nothing short of 2 or 3 years. Have a B team, if someone gets injured the B team players slots in and then the spot at the B team level is filled from the Provinces. This will also help the squad with continuity.

Problem if you focus too much on a small group of players then you don't generate depth.
