The head of the 2010 local organising committee, Danny Jordaan, said South Africa’s bid for the 2015 Rugby World Cup would use the Green Point stadium rather than Newlands “for obvious reasons”.

Obvious being the fact that Morne du Plessis, the guy who made our final presentation to the IRB runs the company operating Green Point.

Much prettier, much bigger, more modern, will have all the right cabling, no need to grovel to WP rugby honchos etc etc etc.

It would be nonsensical not to use GreenPoint. The billions spent on building it and then not to use it for hosting World events.

Sad as it may be, the iconic Newlands is about to become redundant. It may not be demolished in the near future, but its future at being the premier stadium for rugby events is about to come to an end.

Almost as dead as the Stormers...
Will Greenpoint still get that retractable roof?

Good idea if you ask me. About time they started moving things away from Newlands.

Why? Before Greenpoint stadium, what other choice did they have?

Ellis Park is next, I fear :( I hate going there to watch rugby. The surrounding area is a dump.

I HATE Ellis Park! Crap area. I refrain from going there. Loftus though looks beautiful with the improvements.

Cup boost for England

Rugby World Cup Limited back England bid for 2015 tournament

England look set to host the 2015 RWC after Rugby World Cup Limited announced they were backing the RFU's bid for the tournament.
The World Cup was last held in England in 1991 - with Will Carling's men going on to reach the final - although Twickenham, Leicester, Bristol and Huddersfield subsequently hosted games in 1999.

However if the IRB Council ratify the recommendations by RWCL then the tournament will return in six years time.

The RFU have held off competition from South Africa, Italy and Japan to receive the endorsement - with IRB set to make a final decision on July 28.
RWCL have also recommended that Japan are awarded the tournament in 2019 - and if agreed, it will be the first time the World Cup has been held by one of the lesser nations.

RWCL chairman Bernard Lapasset said in a statement on the IRB website: "All the tenders were of a very high standard and each union demonstrated that they could host an excellent Rugby World Cup.
"It is a tribute to the health of the game and the enormous prestige of RWC that the field was so strong.
Congratulate

"Both Italy and South Africa submitted comprehensive tenders with very strong government support and would be capable of hosting outstanding Rugby World Cup tournaments now or in the future. I would like to thank and congratulate them both for the quality of their tenders.

"However, there could only be two recommended unions and after detailed review, the RWCL Board decided that England and Japan would provide the best balanced combination of hosts for the continued world-wide development of the game."

RWCL believe that the funding generated from holding the tournament in England would help raise the funds to develop the sport across the world, while providing a superb spectacle.

"A tournament in England would allow the IRB to maximise funding available for investment in the game through a strong commercial programme and a great RWC showcase," added Lapasset.

"In the heart of the UK's proposed Decade of Sport, RWCL believes that the RFU will deliver a RWC that will capture the imagination, attract strong attendances at superb venues and maximise the festival experience for the millions of attending supporters."

South Africa, only nation to exceed minimum IRB financial guarantee
South Africa determined to keep bid alive

The South African Rugby Union (SARU) have refused to admit defeat in their bid to host either Rugby World Cup 2015 or 2019, despite failing to win the recommendation of the board of Rugby World Cup Limited (RWCL). England (2015) and Japan (2019) were named as the Board's preferred hosts for the next two Tournaments after a tender process that also included Italy as well as South Africa. The final decision rests with the Council of the International Rugby Board (IRB) who meet in Dublin on July 28 to finalise the hosting nations.
"We are very disappointed not to have won the Board's recommendation but we have not given up," said Mark Alexander, deputy president of SARU and chairman of the Bid Committee. "We met and frequently exceeded every criteria of the tender document and we will now have to examine the findings of the Report presented by RWCL to the Board."
The SARU Bid was backed by government who underwrote the minimum tournament guarantee. The guarantee underwrites ticket sales for the tournament.
"The IRB asked for a minimum guarantee and we were the only nation to offer in excess of that. Our Bid received exceptional assistance and support from the Sports Minister, the Reverend Makhenkesi Stofile, the Department of Sport and Recreation as well as Cabinet and without their backing we simply would not have Bid. The Rugby community of South Africa is very grateful to them.
"Their support would ensure that a Rugby World Cup in South Arica would be a financial success to aid in the growing of the game globally, while the infrastructure and facilities that are being put in place for the FIFA 2010 World Cup would provide Rugby with an outstanding stage on which to showcase the game."

That is why it is about time they start moving things. Newlands on a match day is carnage.

Green Point was built with this in mind. All the naysayers can suck it. :)

It seems the choice of stadium for either the 2015 or 2019 tournament may prove to be a meaningless choice anyway. By all accounts the IRB has already decided that they need a tournament which makes money in 2015, as a result of the one in New Zealand apparently looking like it will run at a loss, and they feel the UK will offer this. Thereafter they are wanting to spread the game to the lesser unions and are therefore set on choosing Japan for 2019.
