I don't think I've ever seen an uglier rear end on a car in my life. Imagine driving through town with this joke:

Honda-Civic-Type-R-2.jpg

That doesn't seem like the same car.

Too rounded and not as angular as the other journo pics suggest.

****

When Honda make a 4-door autobox version let me know, then I'll pay attention.

No auto box, but it is a 4-door. They have also retained the rear seat layout of the existing Civic. This means that the interior will be more practical for general use than what you will find on the mainstream Golf and Focus models.

Aaah I see now in fact it does have the same hidden rear doors.

The rear of the production version wasn't scaled back at all it's just as, if not more extreme than the concept. The rear lights change was probably just a cost cutting or safety measure it would be expensive, impractical or even confusing to other drivers to integrate it into the wing like that.

It'll be a nice upgrade for you. ;)

/I kid the GT86, trolls be gone.

I'll see how things go, but the plan is to keep the S2000 for 2 years or when I eventually emigrate (whichever comes first).

The funny thing is I have 4 serious buyers lined up already, including two with cash offers higher than what I spent on the car. :/

Did they just approach you having seen the car?

Yesterday around 6pm, saw a very clean S2000, same as your colour going down Bolton in rosebank, was it you?

I actually took an 86 for a test drive when it came out and although people complain about the power up here, it was a super fun drive.

It honestly isn't always about straight line acceleration. Its low flickable and fun.

I like the exterior styling but not the interior however

That's why we have a BRZ.

One got my details, one is a colleague and two just approached me. :)

Not guilty this time, I was in Bryanston and Randburg all of yesterday.

Imagine it being even more flickable, fun and driver-oriented with an extra 20% power, better weight distribution and a 9,000rpm redline - then you have the S2000.

I've spent extensive time in a few GT86s and while they are fun-ish (I'm not a fan of the cheap-feeling interior), they feel like they're trying (and not quite managing) to be the modern S2000.

I do the disagreement in the 86 trying to be a modern S2000 for the following reasons:

They didn't try anything with the interior. Its a bakkie interior with sporty looking shifter

It's safer because of the less power and can therefore expect linear power all round. Watch what happens in your underwear at the back when you hit vtec mid corner. U can easily lose it / slide out or worse

The 86 is far more forgiving due to the lower power and that peak power not kicking in suddenly at 6500rpm

The 86 made me feel confident and was fun. The S2000 is like a car on crack sometimes

Well they're both Japanese, lightweight rear-wheel drive front engined sports cars. Apart from the one having a roof, they target exactly the same market. I think the difference comes in where the S2000 is purely focused on driving, whereass the GT86 is more of a compromise (the small things that make it more practical than the S2000).

In this instance safer just means slower. The S2000 is very tail happy if you want it to be (I can comfortably get the arse out at 20km/h with minimal effort even on good, wide rubber), but when you're driving it properly (and know what you're doing) it feels controlled and balanced. Remember that I have the South African AP2 version with a few enhancements that make it less skittish than the AP1.

The VTEC mid corner thing will catch out someone new to the car, but if you've got some time behind the wheel you'll know what to expect.

The 86 is far more forgiving due to the lower power and that peak power not kicking in suddenly at 6500rpm

The significantly slower car is more forgiving, that I'll give you.

The way I see it, you can run out of talent very easily in the S2000, whereas you'll need to properly stuff up to do the same in the GT86.

Make no mistake, the GT86 is a great new option on the market with tons of potential, but when compared to something that many regard as one of the best cars ever made it seems to fall a bit short (but then again most cars would).

This is of course talking stock versus stock, modded it's a whole nother ballgame.

I was once driving an S2000 handling those bends like a pro but then I got brave and the car said 'is it?'

Then I got scared very quickly

Which features were left out, exactly?

Keyless feature, remote boot opening, automatic start, extra screen, side mirror camera, reverse mirror camera and other things which somehow made it to the Ballade, which is cheaper, but not the others.

Jazz Keyhole is in an awkward spot in the SA version.
