"It’s pretty certain now that we will never see an Audi RS1 in this generation but a German based tuning company has taken it upon themselves to boost the little S1 into RS-like territory. This is the B&B Automobiltechnik S1 and it’s been enhanced to match the likes of its bigger brother, the Audi RS3.

The S1 performance enhancement is available in five different stages of which the fifth one is only worth mentioning. While making use of the turbocharged 2,0-litre engine sourced from the Audi S3, this S1 is able to produce 279 kW and 540 N.m of torque to all four wheels made possible thanks to the addition of a larger turbocharger with an increased boost pressure of 0,25 bar, a high-performance intercooler, racing exhaust system with bespoke downpipes and catalyst and a special oil cooling system.

The end result of this is a 0-100 km/h time of 4,5 seconds and a top speed of 285 km/h. The total cost of his package is €11 000 (R184 202) but the parts can be purchased individually.

If you require more stopping and handling capabilities however, you will need to purchase the optional sports springs which lowers the ride by 35 mm and the 342 mm ventilated front brake disks mated to the B&B 18-inch wheels which will collectively cost €5 891 (R98 798)."

Audi is in the final stages of testing its most hardcore 4-door A3 variant – the RS3 sedan, which will be launched soon.

It's surprising, given how hotly anticipated the German luxury car is, that details of the RS3 sedan are a trifle sketchy. The 4-door RS3 will continue to use the same MQB platform as its Sportback sibling, but there is a strong possibility that it will use a newly developed engine.

The engine is expected to be a 2.5-litre 5-cylinder turbopetrol, but not the same unit as in the hatchback version. Instead, it could be the motor that will debut later this year in the TT RS; one reportedly capable of making 300 kW (that's more than the Mercedes-AMG A45 – although that has one less cylinder).

With this information, we can expect the RS3 Sedan to be a bit quicker than the RS3 Sportback’s 0-100 kph (4.3s) with a limited top speed of 250 kph.

With the TT RS arriving later this year, the introduction of the 4-door RS3 is like to be pushed back until 2017. We anticipate that South Africa has a relatively good chance of getting this model, which will compete with the likes of the BMW M2 and the CLA45.

2017 Audi RS3 Saloon spotted testing

An Audi RS3 Saloon has been spotted testing at the Nürburgring, confirming that Audi will offer the RS3’s five-cylinder engine and running gear in a four-door body.

The spotted test car's exterior is nearly identical to that of the S3 Saloon, aside from RS3 bumpers, wider front wheel arches and a large-bore twin-pipe exhaust system.

The saloon will use the same turbocharged 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine of the Sportback, producing 362bhp and 343lb ft of torque. Due to the larger body shape’s extra 15kg in weight, the RS3 saloon's 0-62mph time should be about a tenth of a second slower than the RS3 Sportback’s time of 4.3sec.

The Sportback's dual-clutch seven-speed gearbox and four-wheel drive system will be carried over, meaning the handling and character of the saloon should be near identical to the Sportback.

Audi's other hot compact saloon model, the S3 Saloon, is sold in the UK, but in far smaller numbers than the S3 hatch. A similar story is expected for the RS3 Saloon, which our sources believe will be offered in Britain but will be most successful in continental Europe.

Despite the test car sighting, Audi still hasn't confirmed that the RS3 Saloon is coming. Nevertheless, insiders point to an arrival time of early next year.

The RS3 Saloon will likely be about £2600 more expensive than the Sportback model, so it should cost from around £43,400.

A key rival for the RS3 Saloon will be the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45. The four-door coupé model is closely aligned with the Audi as it produces 376bhp from its turbocharged four-cylinder engine and costs £42,550.

I think it is great value. If I could right now, I would. Hope I can find some nice bargains in a year's time. Currently I'm driving a rental Fiesta 1.4L. It has made me lust after a car with more soul, but I also want all the tech and comfort this S3 has... and the extra power!
