2017 Peugeot 3008 (2nd Generation)

Well done Peugeot!!!

2017 EUROPEAN CAR OF THE YEAR WINNER ANNOUNCED!

The winner of the 2017 European Car of the Year award has been announced on the eve of the Geneva International Motor Show.

The Peugeot 3008, which is scheduled to launch in South Africa in July this year, drove away with the crown for 2017.

The French crossover beat six other finalists to the title: the Alfa Romeo Giulia, Citroën C3, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Nissan Micra, Toyota C-HR and Volvo S90/V90.

The 3008 impressed the judging panel with its combination of style, interior design and performance.

The vehicle is the fifth Peugeot to win the Car of the Year prize and the first SUV to be honoured with the accolade in its history. The brand’s success in the awards dates all the way back to 1969, when the 504 saloon scooped the award.

Back in November, the 58 jury members (motoring journalists from across Europe) whittled down the initial list to the seven finalists above.

In 2016, the Opel Astra took top honours, while 2015 belonged to the Volkswagen Passat, 2014 to the Peugeot 308 and 2013 to the Volkswagen Golf.

The Peugeot 3008 is European Car of the Year

Peugeot crossover takes the win from Alfa Giulia and Merc E-Class

Europe’s Car of the Year is the Peugeot 3008. It was a fairly slender win from the Alfa Romeo Giulia. Third was the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

The other shortlisted cars were the Volvo S/V90, Citroen C3, Toyota C-HR and Nissan Micra.

The Peugeot was a steady scorer from nearly most judges, picking up praise for the fine cabin and powertrain choice.

The Alfa was loved by nearly all judges as a drivers’ car, but many pointed out there should be more to a car than that. And as Alfa shows no sign of offering alternative power or advanced driver assist, many felt it was too much of a minority-interest machine.

The Mercedes got lots of praise for its design, cabin quality and comfort, but in many European countries it’s expensive, and that held it back.

My own points differed: 7 for the Merc, 5 for the Alfa, 3 each for the Peugeot (its dynamics aren’t great) and the Volvo (love it but the Merc, especially on small wheels is better) and the Micra and C-HR. Just one point from me for the Citroen. I am very fond of the thing, but today all manufacturers really should make city auto-brake as standard and the Citroen lacks it. Statistics show it does prevent accidents.

Surprise winner named for 2017 European Car of the Year

Paris - The new Peugeot 3008 was named the 2017 European Car of the Year on March 6 in Geneva by a judging panel comprising 58 European journalists.

The judging panel acclaimed its style, interior design and performance. This prestigious trophy joins the twenty other prizes the new 3008 has already won.

The vehicle is the fifth Peugeot to win 2017 Car of the Year and the first SUV honoured in the history of the CoTY prize.

Another victory for Peugeot

Peugeot has received the prize for Car of the Year for the second time in three years. The new Peugeot 3008 is the first SUV winner since the creation of the trophy in 1964.

It is also the fifth Peugeot vehicle named Car of the Year, following the 308 in 2014, the 307 in 2002, the 405 in 1988 and the 504 in 1969.

The Car of the Year prize is awarded by a judging panel comprising 58 experienced journalists from 22 countries. Thirty models have been competing since early 2016.

Nearly 100 000 customers have already placed orders in Europe; 84% chose Allure, GT Line or GT finish, contributing to an upgrade of the Lion brand. Manufactured in Sochaux, it received the Origine France Garantie (made in France) label.

Here's how the European COTY contenders fared:

1. Peugeot 3008 - 319 points

2. Alfa Romeo Giulia - 296

3. Mercedes-Benz E-Class - 197

4. Volvo S90/V90 - 172

5. Citroën C3 - 166

6. Toyota C-HR - 165

7. Nissan Micra - 135

I must admit I'm looking forward to seeing these on our roads. Maybe it'll give the other OEMs a small shakeup. A fully digital dash as standard? Never thought I'd see the day in South Africa on any car costing less than R400 000.

Yup. It's a huge selling point that all models have that fully configurable digital dash. The graphics & res looks excellent on the many vids I've seen.

And now FiestaST? You used "lovely new 3008" three times in three consecutive posts ... are you a Peugeot dealer? :p

I do agree with you that I'm pretty excited to test drive the 3008, but I don't think I've ever seen you this enthusiastic in your wording about a car.

Lol....So the new Pug 3008 is not "lovely" then?

I used it mostly as a running gag in this context.

Mat from Carwow is just one of those blokes that brings a great does of humour to every review.

Also in my view the new 3008 is very possibly a make it or break it dealbreaker for PSA Group SA. It needs to do reasonably well. I will be posting the monthly NAAMSA sales figures for the 3008 so we can monitor it & see how it goes.

We do *not* want them to "pull out"....You know long SA heritage & all that I harp on about....lol

Pulling out is ok, so long as they don't stealth it on their way back in.

PS: The fact that 'stealthing' was all over News24 and CNN this week blows my mind.
